A duck's quack does not echo. Chuck Norris is solely responsible for this phenomenon. When asked why he will simply stare at you, grimly.

I'm flattered to be a sysop, but of course, I have to start school in the Fall too ;). I will try to log in from time to time though. --Sammka 17:43, 28 August 2006 (MST)

cool post on the main page, man, i just read all of it. Last year at JHU i had a wonderful conversation with my instructor, TA and 3 classmates on the walk back to the dorms from class. The topic of discussion morphed from matrix algebra to yoga and Jamaican spices, becoming one of the most interesting conversations I've ever had. Personally, I agree that the best things I've learned at CTY were not academic knowledge, but the ability to interact socially with others. After all, the phenomenon known as pCTYd is probably not (mostly) from missing 7-hour classes every weekday, but from the presence of a group of good people who really care about you. As to the administration, I think that perhaps they are just fearful of potential repercussions. As CTY is probably growing in enrollment (due to word of mouth or whatever) it is likely that more and more sensitive people would attend. Something that some people make fun of (religion) may be taken as highly offensive to others. I think that perhaps the administration is just trying to please everyone by piling on all these restrictions. As they cannot ban people who are overly religious or intolerant, they compensate by restricting some freedoms. But that's just my theory on it. And, after half an hour of searching, I finally found this, which is a letter written by a former CTY TA/RA about somewhat similar problems back in 1998. It's worth a read if you have some spare time, as it is quite lengthy. Also, as I have aged out, I will be attending a different program this summer run by the Rose-Hulman Institute of Tech in Indiana, and if you would like I'll tell you of my experiences there after I attend for future reference.
tl;dr: I agree that the social aspect of CTY is extremely important, but the program is following a trend of growth from as early as 1998 (see link) that it may be unavoidable. Find other places?
I apologize for the rambling, CTY just means a lot to me an a lot of your points hit home. --Chen

I just checked the holders of the duck for the years that I knew people (1997-2002) and they are all LLRT members, so yes, I suppose it did linger within LLRT. However, I don't think I knew the 1997-1998 holder of the Duck, even though I was a member of LLRT in 1998. So either LLRT was bigger than I remember, or there were exceptions.--Sammka 19:17, 28 August 2006 (MST)

oh, and a staff member who you certainly don't know and who definitely isn't on the CTY-Lancaster list would like to say as a random aside that the administration reportedly doesn't check your student disciplinary record when deciding whether to hire you as staff ;). In fact, such records are almost always archived and forgotten at the end of each year (or possibly at the end of one's time as a student).

Response to Alumni: I dunno what he means, but I want something a bit more organized. This is like a database of CTY, and the mailing list is CLEARLY missing some people. Plus for example when reunions come around, very little people know of the "Current Events" page and then we're scattered between Facebook and GoogleGroups and god knows what else! ~Yulia

I have to put up pictures from reunion, but this is STILL a database much more than an alumni sort of thing. Off to pictures! ~Yulia

Eh, just do what you want, if it pisses me off (personally) I'll let ya know, but it probably wont. (im incredibly tired and I just wanna put my pictures up)

Naah, fine with me :P ~Yulia

This may seem like an odd question, and if you have no idea what I'm talking about, please ignore this. But have you by chance played Mao on a trampoline at a Chinese Dinner Party before? -Wendeth

Wiki-Related Things

Okay, I have a few wiki-related things that I'm posting on your talk because you seem to be the most active sysop/crat:

  • There doesn't seem to be anything like Wikipedia's deletion policies, so I'll just say here that David and Staff:Sirinya Tritipeskul should be deleted. They have no content. (edit: They have been. -FJØRKËN)
  • Are there any policies on this site at all? Do we even have a policy/related things namespace?
  • What are the chances of templates being added to the wiki?

That's all I can think of at the moment. And we need a MOS/article criteria because most of the articles on this site are nowhere near encyclopedic. Of course, this being original research means that it's never going to be encyclopedic, but it can at least be written well. Ryan 16:05, 13 December 2007 (PST)

Another idea:

  • I think it might make things a little easier if we changed the site and course page titles to something like "LAN (Site)" instead of "Site:LAN", or "THEO (Course)" instead of "Course:THEO". It looks a little more like the Wikipedia format, and I personally find it less confusing.

FJØRKËN

  • Not to pile on a list of complaints here (as this wiki is an excellent way to share CTY culture), but what is wrong with wiki formatting (for example, '''? HTML is a bit unwieldy in a wiki article. Ryan 17:02, 19 December 2007 (PST)

From Luke Farrell:

Hello Memoriesonfilm. I was wondering that the templates for the main sites (Skidmore, Lancaster, Carlisle, Los Angeles,Baltimore) are restricted from editing, but some courses and other things on the templates are out of date and expired, so if you could let us edit the main sites to fit the 2016 Catalog for CTY, that we be great. If not, I understand. Sure when I have the time. And yes, it is Luke.

Thanks, Luke Farrell

They information has been deleted, but I could not undo it due to "conflicting Intermediate edits", otherwise, it is gone. Sorry for the trouble. Luke Farrell

The photos are now back to their original places. I made them a little smaller so they wouldn't be in the way so much. Luke Farrell

Sorry about that...

Sorry about editing in ways that messed you up. I was just trying to save you some work - updating an entire wiki within the course of a few days can't be a very enjoyable task. Kakofonous 09:10, 24 December 2007 (PST)

Here are my responses to your questions (in order)
  • (a) I attended Siena this year...so you definitely wouldn't have seen me in real life. I don't really want to say my real name online (taking into account that, despite the small number of them, there have been spam users), so if that is preferred for a sysop, then I'm probably not your guy. I have a relatively large amount of experience with wikis, (with accounts on both Wikipedia and Uncyclopedia) and HTML and...that's probably about all that's relevant regarding me on RealCTY.
  • (b) Sure! Assisting with the site in a greater capacity would be something I'd love to do. Obviously some of the more sysop-y [sic] things like blocking bad accounts (seeing as there hasn't been a block in several months) don't need to be done as much here here than on larger sites, but if I can help with other stuff, I will.
Here are my contribs.
This is also on my talk page. I didn't really know which one to put it on. Kakofonous 19:51, 24 December 2007 (PST)

I saw your new message on the Main Page...what was the original overhaul supposed to have done? Kakofonous 12:47, 1 January 2008 (PST)

Any chance of an update? Don't mean to sound pushy or anything, but it's been a while… --Kakofonous 19:43, 29 February 2008 (PST)
I meant as to your decision of whether to sysop me or not...not a site update. My phrasing can be awkward at times... Oh, and there's something weird with the watchlist tool—it's displaying something that appears in the Wikipedia watchlist, but makes no sense here. --Kakofonous 17:54, 9 March 2008 (PDT)

Hi there-- This is Sirinya Tritipeskul writing here. I've tried to delete my page - a student magnanimously created it at Santa Cruz last summer - but I definitely would prefer NOT to see it online. Could you help me do that?

Couch/Grass orgies?

Why have the couch/grass orgy pages been removed, and why is there a message on the home page about them? Is this due to some pressure from JHU, or what? - Ryan 21:24, 28 June 2008 (PDT)

Grass orgies are now allowed :) I'm at first session at the moment. Head on stomach grass orgies are acceptable. Also I have a picture of frank totally leading you away into the distance. The alcove was looking foreard to meeting you.

Should I add a "sites offered" section to course pages? -FJØRKËN

Hiya there. Uh. Sorry for putting in "What the hell happened to this page." I just went to look at the glowstringing page and I felt like some sort of "WARNING this site got screwed up" sign or something. And sorry about the brackets, too, I just don't know where to put the information, since the LOS canon page is hella messy.

How open is the FNORD page to edits? (Such as the one someone tried to make a couple days ago.)-Horklinator

First off, none of the glowsticking records were "false." Also, considering you are changing your words now, maybe, just maybe, you should think about what you say before you say it. Once again, I must say, you don't know how things are at SAR, and once again you just use LAN as an example. And, by the way, they are very different. Yelling doesn't exist on the internet, and considering I have no power, how am I power tripping? You people simply administer a site badly, that's basically it. You're tone in writing just further shows that you're really just power tripping. And, just so you know, none of the removed items had "False information." What is there to restore? It's you people moving things left and right and deleting everything, not me. I, personally, find that you people are stupid for making a site that you run so badly. But, considering it is your site, I won't argue it further after this.

I just have one question to ask, considering that so many "positions" at LAN make it confusing as to how any of them have "legendary" importance... Why is "The Passing of the Duck" in the LAN HoF? I mean, it seems like you have millions of positions, so I don't see why having 5 people with an obscure position in the same room is anything "HoF-worthy." --- Of course, pointing this out will probably just annoy you, but, c'mon- To me, it doesn't really seem like anything that could ever be considered special. It's really just a memory. Now, maybe if you had 5 emperors from each site or something...

I would just like to remind you that if all you ever want to do is get rid of everything meaningful in SAR history from the only record-book around, then quite simply, this site has no purpose.

P.S. Try not to get so easily offended, you ARE power-tripping, grow up. Frankly, I don't care if you think that just because LAN is further-reaching than SAR that things in SAR mean less, but the fact that you won't even allow for a record of the biggest things from a site... That's just plain stupid-considering the whole reason of this site's existence.- --Pants 03:15, 20 August 2010 (PDT)

I didn't read what you said after the first paragraph, because as I said, I really don't care. You're being illogical and rather hypocritical. That isn't something I would except of a CTY-er, so simply I'm not going to waste my time. Feel free to control your site however you want, I already made my recommendations as to what should have been up there, I edited it accordingly, then it just got reverted. Frankly, you run the site in a certain way just because you went to LAN. You allow so much LAN junk that you find important, while ignoring what's that important to SAR students. But I must repeat, it's your site, have fun running it.

P.S. Maybe you should re-write things yourself, for instance the glowsticking records. Instead of merely removing them because of bad wording. Don't just yell at someone to fix it then delete it if they don't. Or rather, delete it and then yell at someone to fix it.--Pants

Get over yourself, I'm not going to argue this further. Considering you don't seem to care about it, I'm not going to try and improve it anymore. I already tried arguing for what I, and other SAR students I know think should be in there. I won't do your administrative work for you. You didn't accept help, so I'll assume you don't want it. Furthermore, all of that just leads me to believe this site really doesn't care about anything other than LAN. And by the way, I'm deleting it because banter is rather unnecessary, and the only reason you would want it to stay would be if you're being immature in being caught up in a stupid argument. Bottom line is, you win, it's your site- feel free to run it the way you want to. But, as I said, if you want students who actually went to SAR to help, "Don't just yell at someone to fix it then delete it if they don't. Or rather, delete it and then yell at someone to fix it." --Pants 02:48, 21 August 2010 (PDT)

porn/spam pages

I've noticed, after clicking the "Random Page" button a few times, that a large number of articles on the site are spam of some sort, and in a few cases are also porn/links to porn. I wouldn't want to bother you to look through all the articles for those that are "misbehaving", so if you let me, I'll edit the offending articles to have the title "Spam" or "Trash" or "Delete Me"... something like that so you or other sysops can easily identify them as to be deleted. pl0x get back to me, so I know if I should start my purge or not.--Jordar 16:05, 24 May 2011 (PDT) Oh and also, :D

yeah, I noticed this too and came here to let you know. If you look at the recent changes, the vast majority of them are new spammy pages. I'd be willing to help purge too if needed. --Maggie May 25, 2011

regarding the all site consent form

I understand that you sent out an all-site consent form back in 2007. A bunch of us are working on a CTY documentary (which we are trying to get the approval for). We were wondering if you could show us the contents of the consent form-you sent out so we can get an idea of what to include in a possible form that we will send out. Unable to confirm email?

Hi, first, of all, I'm new to this wiki - actually, to wikis in general, so I apologize if I'm making any mistakes here. I'm assuming this is the best place to post to try and get in touch with you, but let me know if it isn't. So anyway, I was trying to confirm my email address (for the record, the only symbols in my email address besides letters are . and @), but I got this error message:

RealCTY could not send your confirmation mail. Please check your email address for invalid characters.

Mailer returned: Unknown error in PHP's mail() function.

How do I deal with this problem?

P.S. Which one is "the email provider used by most people"? It would be nice to know for sure so I don't email the wrong person by mistake. :)

-DesmondWeisenberg (9:47 PM, PDT, August 7, 2016)

Got your message, thanks - but unfortunately, I haven't had any luck with different emails. I tried using a different yahoo and gmail address on both this computer and another one, but the same thing happens each time.

-DesmondWeisenberg (11:38 AM, PDT, August 11, 2016)

Whatever the server update did, it worked - my email is confirmed. :)

Hi!

Hey Max! I'm really glad to hear that you appreciate my efforts :) RealCTY is still incredibly important to me as well, so I'm just happy to help out in any way that I can!

As for young blood, I've been checking out the recent changes on the site, and Lukepf04 and Sarah's Hotspot's edits stood out to me. Luke's young (just turned 16 and will Nevermore out next year) and as far as I can tell, Sarah(?) Nevermored out last year, but they've both been really great with maintaining the site.

Sarah's Hotspot has brought a lot of issues, including some of SML5076 and Smallpenis69's edits, to my attention over the past year or so. Her judgment is great, and she contacts anyone who violates the rules to explain why she changed their edits.

(Speaking of Smallpenis69, is there a way to check users' IP addresses? I was fairly sure Smallpenis69 was the same person as SockPuppetForTheGreaterGood and AnnoyingSockPuppetTwo, but I wasn't completely confident. So I felt a little awkward putting suggestions for Smallpenis69 on SockPuppetForTheGreaterGood's talk page...:/)

And Lukepf04 has been editing all the templates and fixing up the pages for lesser-known and Baby CTY sites. He's done a lot around the site, so I'd definitely recommend him!

All in all, both of them have been incredibly helpful so far and I think they'd do a wonderful job as admins :) --Cathynie (talk) 00:40, 13 August 2016 (EDT)

Last SockPuppet while you figure my username out, Goodbye and thanks for all the fish

Hey Max (and Cathynie, sorry, too lazy to make more than one edit tbh >.>),

Hope all is well.

I haven't been my most sane self in the past week, change in meds seems to have fucked with me a little bit, but I seem to be on a more sane footing now. Sorry again for making your maintenance of this wonderful site more interesting and stressful.

To begin, the unserious edits were mostly just that, me being drunk and on new meds while fucking around. Not appropriate for this place, but its the internet and when you get drunk things happen >.>. Sorry again.

My serious edits are mainly due to the fact that I know that my generation of CTYers looked at RealCTY as a place where one had to go to read up on how to do tradition, and the history of CTY. Naturally, this leads to some assumptions about how certain student structures are supposed to work (vis a vis alcove and positions.) Obviously, I have my own personal opinions about all of that. While I'll talk briefly about some of them, I'll go more into depth on them in a private message to you soon, probably via email.

My main problem with the Alcove isn't exclusivity (it is a problem I have with it, but its not the most pressing one imo.) It's the fact that I know that people have been taken advantage of sexually when the alcove and positions were at their peak of influence during my time and slightly before CTY. Whether or not what happened was rape is besides the point, it was wrong. Obviously, I can't substantiate this claim due to the nature of it and the times that it would have happened. I can tell you that I know it happened, and its something that you'll have to trust me (but verify) on. If I'm correct on the timing of it, it would have happened just slightly after your time at LAN and at the beginning and just before mine.

The fact of the matter is that at nerd camp, everyone is vulnerable in their first year. This is true at college as well, most rapes and sexual assaults happen in people's freshman years. The structure of how traditions and the alcove has traditionally worked makes it so that there are two groups of those who have power in camp -- people who have a say in traditions, and the administrative/residential staff. Both of these groups have had one or two bad actors every couple of years that will take advantage of their power in some way. I can substantiate the latter, but I'd rather not at this time, as it would effectively be outing victims that do not want to come forward for whatever reasons that they hold.

In my opinion, the alcove on this site needs to be treated with much more neutral language and a more fair counterargument to why traditions can grow more organically and from a wider group of students, like they have started to over the past half decade. The plunger, the eggplant, carol the watermelon, the unpause: all were traditions at Lancaster that have grown that were started entirely independent from the Alcove. I'm getting ahead of myself however.

Lancaster has grown since both you and I have last set foot in it tremendously (I think I heard last 1st session had over 500 students?) I have no problem with people still sitting in the alcove and holding up some of the traditions of alcovians. I do have a problem, however, with the base assumption that most traditions are run and should be run by the Alcove. They are not (at least towards the end of my time) due to the changes in camp population, and if they are now, they shouldn't be due to the amount of power that would give to an even smaller minority of students. Giving the Alcove more power results in more opportunities for the very few shitstain students in CTY to claim that its traditional for squirrels to give them sexual favors and have nobody bat an eye at it or speak up, since they sit in the alcove.

I was in a student group of sorts that all socialized with eachother the first 2 years of my CTY experience out of the blue. We all were friends, we didn't claim any rights to tradition, and we had fun. I was a squirrel, but there was no adoption process like there seems to be with so many alcovians of past and present. I wasn't patronized or told that there was any right way to do CTY, and while the massive shitshow that was 2012.1 (which you addressed in your open letter) still affected all of us, it wasn't the end of the world (as we know it) that sweet transvestite didn't play that year. We had eachother, we nerded out, and it was a fun af session. This attitude needs to spread more through CTY, as it decentralizes the experience, and leaves only one group with social power over students -- RAs and administration. They need to get their shit together too, but this is (a very small) thing that a wiki such as this can address with more neutral language.

I'm not saying scrub what has happened in the past, I'm just saying that the Alcove is an antiquated structure that many in years past (including alcovians themselves) have said needs to die (metaphorically). It should just be a place where people sit, and it should be reflected that during 2013-2014, it was, and that it wasn't a regular place for position holders to constantly be sitting in. Assumptions are formed based off of the material on this site, and we as editors can curb the more harmful ones if we so choose.

I'm sure you don't agree with all this, and might be scratching your head. That's fine. once I get my shit together in earnest, I look forward to talking to you over email/chat/whatever, we've got a few mutual friends and I think you'll understand my position better more privately.

Thank you again for this site, truly. It is a valuable resource to learn about how certain things came to be, and I am a very harsh critic. In earnest, some of my opinions on a multitude of CTY student issues and traditions have been formed by some content on this site over the years, and while the content sometimes left me wanting, it was always informative regardless.

I've edited this site more constructively in the past, and I hope to return to that in the future. This is a conversation that needs to be had, with multiple generations of CTYers, and I hope it can start here and transcend it to other online and in person mediums in a more graceful way than I've done.

Adminship offer

Hi Memoriesonfilm: I'd definitely be willing to help out and take on administrator rights on this wiki. I'm an admin on the English Wikipedia so I'm well aware of the tools and responsibilities of administrating a wiki like this. Sarah's Hotspot (talk) 21:46, 15 August 2016 (EDT)

Full names

Hey Max... I know you haven't been around in awhile but maybe you'll see this. I'm getting concerned about the use of full names in some of the articles for memories and halls of shame. I fear it might open the site up to potential issues (perhaps of the legal variety) if we're having people's full names on here, especially when attached to negative and/or embarrassing situations. It's one thing if users are inserting their own names in stories that occurred because they're obviously willing to have their names out there, but it's another when users are writing about people who were at camp but aren't on this site. Any ideas? Sarah's Hotspot (talk) 07:34, 17 July 2017 (EDT)

Question about Baltimore page

I noticed that the informational side box on the Baltimore page says that there is no official canon at the site. I tried to edit this since the Baltimore site does, in fact, have an official canon list and guidelines for what needs to be played at each dance in our Book of Love. When I tried to change this, however, I was told I didn't have permission to do so. I was wondering if this could be changed in some way? Baltimore has always been strict about traditions and the administration takes whats on RealCTY into account. I was Princess of the Blood JHU 18.2 and I spent a lot of time trying to fight for traditions and canon to be properly allowed there; The info on this website really makes a difference. (Sidenote - This isn't strictly related but thank you so much for writing the open letter that's displayed on the main page. It's especially meaningful to me as a Baltimore CTYer since I have spent 4 sessions dealing with unreasonable strictness and the administrations inability to deal with basic issues)

Thanks so much! - Amelia 17:23 EST, August 6th 2018

Update: Thanks for your help resolving the issue! All is good. :)

Main page links

Hello. I'm a regular here and JHU Empress. Something I've reported in the past, but had no response from is about the main page. On the main page there are some broken links on the main page. One in particular is the (funny) one to Eliza's CTY page and another is in the essay page to "CTY Perfection, by Priya Mehta." I'm obviously not an admin so obviously can't edit the main page, so it possible if these can be fixed?

P.S: Is it possible to get a link to the official LAN documenter youtube channel on the main page? https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ7NZ8hb_tI1x5xVIbd--ng

heya! i'm aware that the eliza page is down. i've been super lazy about getting it back up but especially with CTY history and tradition in jeopardy b/c of covid, i have been planning to get it back up. i'll do that sometime this week probably since i've been not home for a while.

i've deleted the broken essay link. as for the LAN documentator channel—this seems more appropriate for a lancaster-specific page.

Site admin

Hey Max! Again! It's Switch here again (the same girl who asked about the main page links). I have two questions for you:

1) It's about the JHU site page. If you look on the JHU site page, you may see that the history sections (where people used to just type '*year*, what happened in said year' There are some collapsed columns. I originally formatted these so that they're expanded by default, but edited them to be collapsed by default. This looks much neater and puts more focus on the general information about each listed topic, but I don’t know if it means that people are more likely to skip the history sections entirely and it's somewhat inconvenient becuase it makes the find command harder to use. For that reason alone, I think I prefer the default uncollapsed option and really want to revert back to that option.

With that in mind, I wanted to know if you or any of the mods had any particular preference on what columns should be used (if at all) and whether you think it would be a good idea to apply similar collapsing/collapsed columns across other site or important tradition pages (because it DOES make things easier to navigate).

2) Apart from my column idea, I've had plans to revise some of the much more outdated tradition pages and continue to update the wiki, either with records from my time at CTY or records form other people who may want to pass on information, but but feel less comfortable editing the wiki. However, I've had that on hold because of a) school being particularly hard on me through september and october and b) because I wanted to put in a mod/admin application first.

I heard that the mod/admin team is always looking for younger blood with a passion for CTY who know their way around editing and have done a lot of it for the good of the site. I think that I fit that description and now that I've been fairly active on the site for three years (albeit under two users because I *did* forget my password before I linked my account to my email), I'd like to think that I've shown sufficient dedication to the site and know more abotu it than most. I know that some of my fellow CTYers from my time don't really write on the wiki, but that it IS a very valuable resource that a lot of people find a lot of solace in. Even as I get further past my CTY days and neither I nor my friends have any more relevant information to add, I'd like to still keep an eye on the site and do my best on the maintenance side of things… although whether I'll ever run out of relevant information to add is uncertain, because I'm somehow still the de facto "editing guy" for the JHU monarchy and I don't know how far into the future I'll get without my successors continuing to ask if I can add something to the wiki for them or how they add links or format bold text (I'm working on an editing 101 document for the JHU monarchy archive to help with this). For now, I'll leave my application here. Of course, if you want to talk more about my application, I'm more than open to further discussion.

Apologies for continuing to pester you about site technicalities. I hope you're doing well wherever you are in the world. – Switch 06:59, 10 November 2023 (EST)
