Hi!

I'm a flying squirrel. Years ago, I often went on RealCTY editing sprees. I still do sometimes, but nowhere near as often.

I can...sort of rave? And teach people? I cannot guarantee that I won't accidentally hit you (or myself) in the face with a glow stick or poi. You have been warned :) If you're interested, hmu I'm one of those crazy people with the spinning lightbulbs (aka poi).

I like you, I love you, I CTY you!

The following is so I don't forget the names of hallmates, RAs, instructors etc, but feel free to read.

Sites and Sessions
LOS 15.1
Course: Examining the Evidence

Instructor: Elicia

TA: Mark

Hallmates: June, Leah, Alexandra, Mio, Miranda, Chia-Hua, Elise, Thuivi, Natalie, and one more whose name I forget. She was Korean and from Los Angeles.

RA: Emily

Residence Hall: Huesman

This session gave me my first experience with a university cafeteria/dining hall. I discovered soda machines. Giving me access to those was a mistake. This was not a great session but it was good enough to make me want to come back.

PAL 16.1
Course: The Renaissance

Instructor: Kurt

TA: Zach

Hallmates: Makayla, Carrie, Grace, Jennifer, Anne, Lila, Chloe, Natalie, Sunny, and Stephanie. Stephanie never showed up.

RA: Dara

Residence Hall: Roble

Notable quotes:
* "The HAWWWWWT POTATOES!"
* "You dimple!"

I could go on and on about how awesome my instructor and TA were this year. They made a huge effort to get us engaged and have fun with the course and didn't talk down to us. They were fantastic.
* "OXYTOCIN!!!" *gives nearest person a hug*
* "Isaac! Step away from the vending machine!"

My instructor was feared by many. He looked threatening, sounded threatening, and acted threatening. We managed to overlook this and (mostly) thought he was awesome.

My unofficial hall and unofficial RA were the only reason I enjoyed this session and I love them all so much.

A list of things that CTY Coordinators don't know you need.

General
The items here are universal, but they may not apply to a site or two. Please do not repost this list for individual sites.

Room Stuff
* Flashlight - forbidden at some sites (CAR)
** As of 2019, book lights are not considered contraband
* Scissors - can be considered as a weapon at some sites and are therefore contraband (CAR)
* Snacks!!! (no nuts or nut products at LAN, LOS, or JHU!)
** Ramen and other instant noodles (if you know how to cook them)
***Plastic forks or chopsticks (unless you plan on robbing the dining hall) and a microwaveable container (Ramen containers are NOT microwaveable)
* Drinks that aren't energy-drinks or highly caffeinated (Coffee tends to be fine)
* Enough clothing to get through the week without doing laundry
* Make sure to bring extra long sheets if you have them. Regular sheets will keep falling off the beds. ESPECIALLY at JHU
* Curling/straightening iron
** Very useful for dances in girls' dorms
* Tissues (they can be hard to find on site for some reason, and there's a good chance you'll need them on the last day)
* Headphones/earpphones
* Laundry bags for dirty clothes
* Bug spray or some other form of bug repellent
* There's no need to buy a desk lamp to do work as many dorms may also have lamps fitted into desks (JHU)
**Bring desk lamps for ISO's
*A dressing gown or REALLY long towel.
**Not everybody wants to stand partially naked in front of their colleagues after the fire alarm catches them in the shower. (Some kind of bathrobe also proves useful when moving between your dorm and the showers)

Traditionish Stuff
* Masking tape/duct tape for Love Tape Day
* Glowsticks or poi sets - for raving
** Lanyard-type objects for stringraving (shoelaces are recommended)
* Rubik's Cube (3x3 is essential. Other shapes are also recommended)
* Clothes to lend for cross-dress day (in a range of sizes)
* Old CTY lanyards
* Any staff lanyards (if you can keep them HIDDEN)
* A copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
* Fishnets, corsets, and other RHPS or goth day items
* Sharpie/Fabric Marker if you want people to sign your shirt
* Old Casino night money that you make copies of//Monopoly money (For Casino Night)
* DVD or physical copies of any CTY traditional films you may want to watch

Other Stuff
* Camera(s)
*Computer (required for some classes and recommended for most others)
* Deck of cards and Poker chips - forbidden but unenforced at CAR
**Bring your best deck as there are sometimes wars for who has the best card deck design
* Audio devices and speakers
** Bring batteries/chargers for them
* Towel or picnic blanket to sit on during quad time; many campuses don’t have any pest services during the summer, so there are a lot of bugs that you might not want to sit on.
* Frisbees, balls, or sports equipment such as tennis rackets
* Permanent markers (fabric markers if you want your shirt signed)
* Reusable water bottles (Unless you go to JHU, where they're readily available from the cafeteria)
* Extra batteries / charger for your calculator
* A hairbrush and plenty of hairties (for dances)
* SO MANY BANDAIDS
** All forms of First Aid are encouraged
* Nail clipper
** Especially if you bring a string instrument to camp
* Bubble mix
* Tide To Go
* Umbrella
* Tide Pods are great for laundry, but DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DETERGENT SLOT. THEY GO IN THE DRUM. (This caused 2 of the washers to break in EST 16.1 and 16.2)
* Don't forget chargers! (Port-adapters are A MUST for international students)
* Comfortable walking shoes for the more active afternoon activities
* Gum/mints (MENTOS)
** If you're not great at talking to people, offering mint or gum is an easy way to start a conversation and/or make friends
* A considerable amount of Cash, especially at CAR and JHU

Lancaster
* Strawberry Kiwi Lemonade (or money to buy it on weekend trips)
* Snacks cannot contain peanuts; they cannot even have been made in a factory that also processes peanuts or makes peanut products. RAs WILL confiscate contraband food.
* Bathrobe and extra towels for Thursdays
* Bulk pack glow sticks [to give to Jack Flash/King James in case (read: when) someone steals the entire bag]
* Bathing suit (if the pool is open)
* Clothes for CTY Holidays, particularly Halloween
* Lab-safe or field trip safe clothes [closed-toe shoes, long pants, long sleeve shirts (especially PBIO and ANSC!!)]
* Fancy clothes for dances
** There are five dances at LAN, so unless you don't feel like dressing up for all five, bring enough fancy outfits.
** If you find a friend your size, you can always swap fancy clothing for a dance or two
* Be prepared for random themes for dances. Themes include Neon, Hawaiian, pj day (2022 summer)
* Nail polish remover
* Spare eyeliner
* Umbrellas, raincoats
* Full strength insect repellent!!!!!!!!!
* IF YOU EAT KOSHER, don't bother getting the kosher meal plan. costs extra, and the KIVO has good kosher food every day anyways. (The problem with KIVO is that it has the best (READ: only edible) food so be prepared for lines.)
*If you get sick of eating the cafeteria food go to the left of the gluten free section
there are quesadillas!
** As of 22.1-22.2, KIVO access has been limited due to other camps having priority.
* Frisbees!!!
* Duck tape!!!!! for love tape day (3rd Monday!)

Carlisle
* Sidewalk chalk
* Assorted clothing for various theme-days
** Fishnets and copious amounts of eyeliner for girls (Goth Day)
** Clothes for the opposite sex to wear for Drag Day (clothes you don't mind getting ripped, stretched out, dirty, etc.)
** America themed clothing for America Day
* Large beach towel for Passionfruit (Lower Quad is wet in the morning) and just for sitting on outside.
* Nail polish remover for Drag Day
* Eye makeup remover for Goth Day
* Costume/cosplay for Summerween
* Speed Queen App (As of '18, laundry no longer takes quarters, but rather uses the speed queen app. Money must be added to an account on the app for laundry to be done)
* Rain jacket or umbrella (bring with you everywhere, as rain in Carlisle is like a light switch)
* LED lamp light (contraband but not monitored. Useful for studying during free time at night.)
* LED poi (for glowstringing), as they tend to stand out more than glowsticks at meet market and dances
* Portable battery/phone charger
* At least $75 worth in cash to be used at Devils Den, Walmart, etc. (not including textbook purchases)
* Glowsticks- thick for glowstringing, thin for bracelets at dances.
* Trash can (in '19 none of the room had trashcans because Dickinson is big on sustainibility)
* Paper towels (for the same reasons as above)

Saratoga Springs (Skidmore)
* Insect repellent (!!!!!)
* Fans - if you're in Howe/Rounds, then no fans are needed.
* Hats (especially snapbacks for Drag Day)
* Extra Clothes to give away for Drag Day
* <s>Ballerina-like clothes (for Rina Day)</s>> RIP Rina Day
* Duct tape, strong string, and clothes hangers for Fairy Princess Day
* Clothes for Naughty Catholic Schoolgirl Day
* A backpack
* Snacks or change for vending machines
* Fans - Ryan Hall, the boys' hall, is cramped and has no A/C
* Alarm clock
* Long-sleeved tee and/or hoodie - the movie theater and the classrooms are freezing
* An umbrella, raincoat, and rain boots
* Lots and lots of clothes - there are few working laundry machines

Los Angeles (LMU)
* Drag day outfit or clothes to lend on Drag Day.
** Girls: baseball cap
** Boys: Fake hair/ hair extensions
* Fan (electric) - Huesman or Doheny are hot; Whelan & Rosecrans are better, and Desmond is by far the best (Desmond, however, is not perfect. Depending on the year, Desmond residents may need to use a fan every day or never.)
* Flip flops that don't break easily and can be used in the showers (which, at least in Desmond, get nasty as the session progresses)
* Hats
* Laundry hamper/bag
* Magazines/some form of entertainment for the weekends, in which you will have large amounts of personal time)
* Masking and duct tape (for Love Tape Day, and to mark your lanyard/room card holder if you're prone to losing things)
* Popcorn (can be popped in the 4th floor lounge in Desmond)
* Sidewalk chalk - they often run out in the activity
* Sunblock
* Sunglasses
* Sweatshirt (for breaks during night class, when it's freezing in Sunken Gardens)
* Ghost Stories, horror novellas or other sleepover scares
* Laundry basket/hamper/bag and detergent. Washers are free, but do not provide detergent
* Power strip/extension cord -- power outlets may be hard to find or obstructed.
* Any desired personal technology (Phones, laptops, etc) -- JHU runs a guest wi-fi network and allows use of personal devices.
* A non-trivial amount of spending money -- the local Barnes and Noble bookstore, Insomnia cookies, CVS, etc
* Musical instruments and/or sheet music -- you will be able to practice during some activity periods in JHU's music rooms
* Something to do outside after lunch period -- books, frisbees, or footballs, chalk because you are not allowed back in the dorms between lunch and the afternoon class
* At least 10 pairs of underwear in case you run short before Laundry Day
* NOT a desk lamp - we don't even do homework in our dorms
** I disagree. Although we don't do homework, desk lamps are great for providing light during sleepovers/ISOs.
* Random looking clothes for the dances: neon, sea-themed, movie/Hollywood, outer space, etc
* Nice looking clothes for Casino Night & Semi Formal
* Extra Money for:
* Guys: Bring cologne and nice clothing for the dances. DON'T MAKE OUT IN THE UPSTAIRS FARINON BATHROOM!
* SPOONS: Blammo is likely, so bringing unofficial decoy spoons is a good idea.
* BRING WATER. The only functioning water fountains in Keefe are in the basement. The tap is fine to drink, however.
* For those of you taking Great Cases - bring appropriate clothing for field trips.
* No glitter
* EXTRA PHONE CHARGERS!

Seattle
*Kleenex. Unless you want to use paper towels to blow your nose, bring some.
*Fan. During the summer of 2017 and 2018 it was hot, and in 2018 the front desk only rented out five.
*Curtains. If your room faces the sun, YOU WILL NOT SLEEP UNLESS YOU BRING CURTAINS OR TAPE TOWELS UP AS CURTAINS
*Unlimited data - We are not given the wifi password, but you can use your own data or find a friend with a hotspot and unlimited data

Santa Cruz
*Dance clothing options for themes. Common ones include Neon, Prom, and Western.
*Extra toiletries, especially soap. You will want to shower every day.
*Small mirror for your room. It's annoying to go to the bathroom every time you want to check how you look.
*Command hooks. Useful for holding your lanyard at night, towels, laundry bag, or other things.
*Snacks and drinks that can be consumed lukewarm. The dinning hall and vending machine options are subpar and rarely restock.
*Good walking shoes. The poor souls attending class at Oaks climb nearly 600 stairs a day.
*Foursquare or volleyball for class breaks and quad time.
*Face paint is helpful for color wars, CTY Olympics, and Braveheart.
*Paper towels

Dances are occasions during which people dance.

Dances at CTY are similar to school dances, as the conduct is very like a regular old school dance. The music selection, aside, of course, from the Canon, is a mix of common contemporary pop and rap, esoteric rock to appease those who appreciate it, and songs that invite people to show off their skill at certain types of dance. Examples of the latter include swing dances, techno for ravers, and songs that are not on the Canon (yet) but have dances associated with them anyway, such as the CTY Shuffle (Icecream by Lou Bega).

Some campers who opt not to attend certain portions of the dances are sometimes welcome to return to their dorms, where their fellow campers wage war (Risk and chess), "not gamble" (playing cards), and play alternative selections of music or watch movies, supervised by RAs. Others remain in the dance area, and talk to people around them. It is also possible to see someone buried in a book at the dance, if the need overtakes them. Occasionally, there are those who would rather practice raving during non-canon songs, and proceed to join the rave circle later in the dance.

Canon
:Main article: Canon

Each site has a variety of traditions as to which songs constitute the Canon. The Canon is the set of songs which must be played at all CTY dances. The Canon varies among sites and even between sessions in some rare cases.

Dances by Site
Lancaster
Dances at Lancaster can take place in a few different places, depending on weather and other factors. The primary location is on the main quad, in front of the dining hall. However, in the event of rain, the dance (along with all the speakers and such) is moved to the ASFC, which some people prefer, but which has a tendency to get rather hot. In the extremely unfortunate event of rain coupled with an ongoing event in the ASFC (such as a craft fair), the dance is moved to Mayser Gym, which practically nobody prefers and which has a rather more pronounced tendency to get really hot really fast. In 17.1, three out of five dances were held on Hartman Green because of construction on the quad.

There are usually five dances at Lancaster: first Friday, first Saturday, second Friday, Second Saturday, and last Friday (calendar Thursday). The dances usually last from about 7:30 to past 10:00. On the nights of dances, lights out is extended slightly (11 pm) to allow Afterdance participants to properly prepare for sleeping or sleepovers.

Music at Lancaster dances is rich in Canon, with all of the Upper Canon and half of the Lower Canon being played at each dance. On the day of the final dance, Lower Canon songs are played at lunch and/or dinner so that traditionalists may hear all the Canon and non-traditionalists get plenty of regular dancing music at the dance.

Also, look out for the raving circle when there's techno music on, especially "James Brown is Dead". It's always a great thing to watch!

Carlisle
Dances at Carlisle take place in ATS, the Anita Tuvin Schlecter Auditorium. There are four of them per session:

# The evening of First (or "moderate") Saturday;
# The evening of Second Friday;
# The evening of Second ("Big") Saturday; and
# The evening of the Last Thursday.

Dances 2 and 3 are back-to-back dances, which probably contribute to the general lack of energy in the third week of camp. The dance on the Last Thursday is shorter than the other three, being from 8:00 to 10:15, whereas the others start at 7:00.

CTY-ers who don't want to go to the dance can go to Mellow Quad (Super 2nd) to play Risk, various card games, or to watch a G or PG-rated movie. RAs heavily supervise the short route between ATS and Mellow Quad, armed with flashlights. This is because couples often use "going to Mellow Quad" as an excuse to make out behind the bushes.

Dance music at Carlisle consists of a mixture of Canon, generic dance music, and "CTY favorite" songs which are NOT Canon (and usually change from year to year). Dances are rife with traditions, generally in reference to specific songs. Some examples:

"Sandstorm" always results in circles around a few central ravers, despite RA efforts to break this "exclusive" tradition. "The Time Warp" is always performed with the moves outlined in the song lyrics ("It's just a jump to the left"). In "Blister in the Sun," dancers crouch steadily lower during the whispering sequence. The dance to "Tunak Tunak Tun" involves a combination of dancers in the seats (doing a somewhat indescribable arm-movement sequence) and conga lines on the floor, although occasionally the lines move into the stands as well. Sometimes individual dancers freestyle on the floor, though this is relatively rare. In addition, as of 08.2, a head banging circle during "Stairway to Heaven," started by Arthur Schechter and Miriam Sadie (among others- however, the aforementioned two are notable for having had the longest hair at 08.2), became a regular occurrence.

"American Pie," of course, is the most tradition-laden song, with specific phrases to be yelled, dance moves corresponding to lyrics, and massive amounts of circle-swaying, also known as cornucopia.

The dance floor is also very unique because of the fact that it actually shakes depending on how many people are dancing and how fast they are moving. There are often concerted and coordinated efforts to coax the dance floor into literally swaying back and forth, a practice generally not condoned by staff.

Los Angeles (LMU)
There are three LMU dances, which take place from 7:00 to 10:00 or 10:15. The first two are on Friday nights and the last is on Thursday night of the third week. They historically take place in the Rosecrans Courtyard. However, in recent years, they have taken place in Sullivan Courtyard, which is near Doheney and its famous fountain, and the courtyard between the female dorm, Desmond and the male dorm, Whelan. More recently, they have taken place at Regents Terrance and the Sunken Gardens. Little Canon is currently featured at LMU dances, although "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)," "Stairway to Heaven," and "American Pie" are all honored traditions. Like at other CTY sites, "Sandstorm" features a few ravers and the occasional breakdancer. Sometimes even the RAs, (Jason Boring) for instance, joins in the raving. Ravers often carry around a pair of connected glow sticks. Don't ever attempt to touch a Raver as they are preforming, accidents may happen.

Usually, large bowls of Doritos, Lay's, oreos, and starburst are out, as well as a jug of warm lemonade or water with cups that usually run out before the end of the dance, and on occasion, before the beginning.

All students are to attend the dances, however, students can also sit on the sidelines and play cards, board games or chess. Movies are played during the dance in the Lion's Den.

Baltimore
There are three dances--the first Friday, the second Friday, and the third Thursday. They all last from 7:00 to 10:00 or 10:15. Dances are always held at the Glass Pavilion. The high holy Canon at JHU consists of "Stairway to Heaven","American Pie", and Forever Young. There are usually around 3 glowstring ravers, some freehanders, and a few breakdancers. Raving is done to "Sandstorm" and "Everytime We Touch".

There always are games in a separate room and a movie downstairs.

In every session, on the last dance, a slideshow of photos taken of CTYers throughout the session is presented near the end. After this, the CTY Princess and Prince, who are both students, and the CTY King and Queen, who are both RAs, are announced. These spots were voted on earlier in the session. The Princess and Prince, and King and Queen share a dance, usually to Forever Young, and other students join in after a bit. However, in more recent years, there is only an Emperor and Empress announced at Passionfruit chosen by the previous Emperor and Empress.

In 18.2, Easton CTYers Carly Berglas, Maddy Miller, Barton Chen and RA Jairo taught the whole site Payaso de Rodeo by Caballo Dorado.

Right, left, back, forward, turn

Saratoga Springs
Saratoga Springs has four dances. Dances are on Friday evenings, held at the Dance Center, a large gym, with the exception of the forty-five minute Dave Rave held on the last Wednesday after evening classes. There are board games in one side of the gym, and the dance takes place in the other half. No other scheduled activities are available, and the dance is mandatory.

It is traditional for nevermores to collaborate and create the playlist for each dance.
Unfortunately, the full Canon is not played at every dance anymore, as more pop songs are played, but all High Holy Canon and Upper Canon songs are played. The gym is often hot, so doors are kept open and one may take a break on the sidewalk or grass outside the gym. However, as of 2013, the Dance Gym is air conditioned - but it's still a good idea to take occasional breaks. In 2013.2, the Marriage Booth was set up outside the gym during the second dance.

Easton
There are three dances-first Friday, second Friday, and the third Thursday. All are held in the Marlo Room. Easton Canon consists of "All My Life," "Swing, Swing," and "American Pie," in that order. Stairway, Pianoman and Iris, though not officially canon are almost always played right beforehand.

Seattle
There are three dances: first Friday, second Friday, and third Thursday. They are held at either Campion Ballroom or the student center building.

Sadly, they have a reputation for being boring. Because of the elevator issue, you can't go back to your room. However, there are usually card games going on so you can rest on the side. Common issues of the dance include too-quiet music, bright lights, not enough drinks, a stupid playlist, not enough canon, and too few dancers.

Seattle, being a relatively new site, is generally devoid of tradition and was one of the sites hit hardest by pandemic-related closures. In 2022, the site had less than 100 students and even lacked the "DIE LIVE SEX MORE ORGY" chant during American Pie that occurred in past years.

Stanford
Three dances occurred at Stanford in one session, often in front of or in the dorms, though the site of the dance changed from year to year. There used to be canon at Palo Alto, but in the years coming up to its closure after the summer of 2016, it was practically nonexistent (other than of course American Pie). For more information on Stanford's canon, please visit the Canon page, where a link to a canon playlist may be found.

Dublin, Ireland
In CTYI, the dance is referred to as a disco. There are three in each session; two on each Saturday and then a final one on the Thursday of the third week.

Santa Cruz
Three dances are held at UCSC: first and second Friday, and last Thursday. The themes of all three are decided by the RA dance committee. In 23.2, the first dance was themed Cowboys vs. Aliens and featured neon green dyed water.

The canon differs significantly from other sites; for example, it does not include Stairway to Heaven nor Iris. It does include many line dances, like The Wobble, Footloose, The Cupid Shuffle, The Electric Slide, Uptown Funk, and the Chicken Dance.

Dances usually feature foursquare, card games, and volleyball circles at the beginning, as well as break dance circles, which turn into "mosh pits" at dark.

Protests
If a group of campers takes particularly strong offense with any song, especially in daylight hours, it is common to see them stage a protest. Students may lie down on the open grass and remove their left shoes to hold them in the air. This is done to show that the song being played is "not right," or to illustrate the fact that "God didn't give us two left feet to dance to bad music." This can result in the campers involved being harassed by the counselors themselves, if the song is one that the counselors feel the campers should enjoy. Other campers will protest in different ways. Some dissent against certain songs of the Canon, and will be seen prancing around a group or circle when certain slower songs are played. Protesting, however, is now banned at Carlisle

The Down-Pump
A commonly known dance move at CTY is the down-pump. Often, campers in a dance circle will not know what to do during a song. The answer? The down-pump. A camper will clench their fists. Then (to the beat of the song) they will pump their fists twice downwards and twice upwards. When students see another fellow student down-pumping, it is encouraged for them to join in until the whole circle is doing the down-pump. This lasts until the end of the song and works with virtually any song (but don't do it during canon!)

Afterdances
:Main article: Afterdance

There are also different variations of the Afterdance which occurs primarily during Lancaster's two sessions. Other sites have their own post-dance traditions.

The Nanjing, China site was the first CTY International site, opening in 2007. It served students in grades 9-12. The site was based around the Hopkins-Nanjing Center located in the city of Nanjing, which is near Shanghai on China's eastern seaboard. In its first year of operation, the site held over 140 students. CTY reserved seats students on flights from New York and San Francisco. During session, students visited the city of Nanjing and the surrounding area.

Courses
Unlike the Spain and Mexico sites, the Nanjing site did not offer courses both in English and the local language (Chinese). However, additional Chinese language instruction lessons were offered in addition to the courses listed in the site template.

San Francisco

Site Overview
San Francisco State University is at the southern end of San Francisco city/county limits, one mile from the Pacific Ocean. The weather is unusually cold throughout the summer. The weather is always 50 degrees and cloudy, but further inland, the sun shines for a few hours. On the upside, it never rains, only some mist from fog), it is not humid, and air conditioning remains unnecessary. The biggest tease is that there is a Subway on campus, but it is outside of what is considered In Bounds.

CTY opened its Civic Leadership Institute (CLI) for students entering grades 10-12 during second session at San Francisco State University in the summer of 2006. CLI was run by the Civic Education Project based out of the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. In 2007, its second summer, CTY-CLI hosted approximately 60 students and 20 staff.

Students are divided into sections, each containing approximately 15 students, to engage in a course called "Civic Engagement and Social Issues." In this service-learning oriented course, students delved into issues of the day, such as homelessness and poverty, as well as explored models for social change and problem solving. Students also participated in five field experiences.

As is the case with several other CTY sites, the cafeteria food is bad. Students are advised to budget their spending money accordingly on food off-site.

The West Coast CTY-CLI program moved to Berkeley, CA, from 2010 on.

Mary Park Hall
Mary Park Hall is a six-story "urban" dorm used by CTY. It is one of two traditional dorms on the campus and it houses freshmen during the school year. Each room is double-occupancy and is carpeted and furnished with a closets, one cable TV jack, dressers, extra long twin beds, and desks and chairs. Bathrooms are in every wing of each floor and there is at least one lounge.

Student Life
Student activities tend to be centered around Mary Park Hall, the dining hall, and the Village steps.

The afternoon activity block is two hours long. Students have the option of signing out to wander around the campus with a buddy, signing in to stay in the dorm, or signing up to participate in activities such as Frisbee.

Off-campus adventures exist. In 2007, students could sign up to go visit the San Francisco Zoo and view a movie in the West Portal District.

Some activities have a distinct social justice focus.

The Monterrey, Mexico site was a CTY International site started in 2008. It served CTYers from Mexico and the United States who were completing grades 9-12.

Campus
The site was housed at ITESM, Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, also known as Tec. Some studies rank Tec as the top university in Mexico. The university is located in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, in the northern part of the country near the Texas border. Unlike the site in Nanjing, China, approximately half of the students at the Monterrey site are from Mexico.

Traditions
Since 2008 was the site's first year, traditions were scarce and mostly started by CTYers from different campuses; many can recall the sloppy first rendition of American Pie. The campus motto was "¡Somos primeros!" Spanish for (roughly) "We are the first!" In addition to the floor rivalry, the song "A Labio Dulce" by Iskander was played along with American Pie at the end of each dance.

Floor Wars
Among the cultural aspects were the floor wars. As all students were housed in the same building, they were identified by the floor they lived on. Each floor (3, 4, 7 ,8) would scream their number in Spanish (tres, cuatro, siete, and ocho, respectively) to prove their superiority. In 2008, the main rivalry was between the female floor of Siete and the male floors of Cuatro and Ocho. Cuatros were notorious for their behavior: breaking the lights-out rule more often than not, breaking one of the elevators (and being stuck between floors), almost breaking the other elevator, the song-and-dance of the Pokémon theme, and in general taking everything a level too far.

However, whenever there was free time and students could go on any of the floors, Siete was where the party was at. That's probably because some of the coolest people were on this floor.

Eventually, the world was enlightened and everyone realized Siete had the most power. Alex Yu lost a lot of respect by being Pikachu, which eventually led to the downfall of Quatro. Ocho's Randy Person won all of that respect for wearing a girl's dress and performing "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" with Ketul Patel. Siete remained on top by lending their clothing to both floors for both very entertaining acts.
Can a concrete boat float? How do you build the strongest bridge with the lightest materials? Physics—the science of matter and its motion—provides answers to questions like these. In this course, we’ll explore core principles of mechanics, aerodynamics, electricity, magnetism, and orbital motion, and then apply them to engineering design projects like building a trebuchet; designing and launching a rocket; and constructing a roller coaster. By collecting and analyzing data, writing reports about your discoveries, and participating in class lectures, discussions, and practice exercises, you’ll learn major physics concepts and work individually and in teams to create solutions to common engineering problems. Before taking this class, you should either complete CTY’s Inductive and Deductive Reasoning or Data and Chance, or have experience with pre-algebraic concepts like equation manipulation, interpreting graphs, and expressing large numbers in scientific notation.
Would a boat made of bread and peanut butter actually float? Could one tree be recycled into sweaters and bicycle seat covers? Could a pancake as big as a city block flatten a school? Children’s books ask readers to believe in imaginary worlds—but sometimes, there are important science concepts behind their words and pictures. This course delves into the science behind the stories. You and your classmates will explore the digestive system, weather patterns, engineering, and city planning while reading Judi and Ronald Barrett’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. You’ll learn about animal classification, waste management, pollution, industry, invention, plants, and ecosystems through Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. By trying techniques that scientists use every day, like measurement, estimation, and rounding, you’ll learn how to predict what will happen next while collecting and classifying data, and you’ll leave the course with the ability to recognize science concepts in literature and the real world.
What does a subatomic particle measured in femtometers have in common with a galaxy measured in light years? Both are a part of humans’ effort to quantify our world. In this course, you’ll explore numbers, from the miniscule to the unimaginably large, and learn how they help explain natural phenomena such as time, distance, and temperature. Moving beyond traditional arithmetic, you and your classmates will consider questions like: how much dog food would you need if your dog were the size of a dinosaur? You’ll examine different measurement systems and learn the origins of familiar and unfamiliar methods of measurement, invent your own units of measurement, and use dimensional analysis to investigate conversions between different scales or systems. Then learn to apply concepts of ratio and proportion by constructing and analyzing scale models of our solar system, the human body, and other objects in our natural world.
How do we see, perceive, and describe the world around us? We can use mathematics to measure, calculate, and find patterns. We can use technology to expand what we see and observe. And we can tell stories to capture details and create meaning from our experiences. This course sampler gives students an opportunity to explore and describe the world from new and different perspectives.

The sampler will be designed with three cohorts of 3rd and 4th grade students using the following courses as a basis:

Math: Geometry and Spatial Sense
Spatial understanding is necessary for interpreting, understanding, and appreciating our inherently geometric world. Many everyday tasks such as designing a treehouse, solving a jigsaw puzzle, or laying out a garden require spatial reasoning abilities. This course will help students develop those abilities through hands-on investigations and discussions about big ideas as they learn practical and fun ways to apply geometric foundations and spatial sense to the larger world.

In this course, students will learn how to:

*Use coordinates (scale drawing) to develop enlarged images
*Classify and categorize angles and geometric shapes
*Define and calculate perimeter, area, and volume
*Compare geometric objects to determine best fit
*Construct figures using a protractor, compass, and straight edge

Science: Through the Microscope
Today’s 3D microscopes that can capture the nerve connections inside a brain are a far cry from the magnifying lenses ground by hand in the 13th century. Yet both can help us think critically about microscopic worlds. In this course, we’ll learn to identify the parts of a microscope and how they work together to serve as a window into another world. We’ll learn how scientists use microscopes and we’ll record our own observations —such as the color, shape, and features of different cells and multicellular organisms—in a lab notebook. Along the way, students will learn to think and do research like real scientists and gain an introduction to the field of biology.

In this course, students will learn how to:

*Explain how light, refraction, and magnification make a microscope work
*Examine and identify the parts and functionality of a microscope, and calculate magnification
*Use microscopes to make observations and record specific details in a lab notebook, such as the color, shape, and features of different cells and multicellular organisms
*Model scientific techniques for using microscopes as a tool to investigate cell responses to changes in the cell’s environment

Writing: Being a Reader, Becoming a Writer
How do writers effectively capture the people and places they observe? In this course, we’ll read pieces of fiction and nonfiction and begin to explore the elements of good storytelling. Students will learn to provide details that develop character and a sense of place, and to think inwardly as they write a short story or personal narrative based on people and places they know.

In this course, students will learn how to:

*Keep a writer’s journal
*Create a story using the writing process
*Explain the basic elements of narrative writing
*Understand and apply the concept “show, don’t tell”
*Illustrate and apply elements of character development
*Apply various writing techniques for creating a setting of a story
*Explain the importance of the use of the five senses and realistic details in a story
*Provide constructive feedback to peers in a writers’ workshop setting
Behind only one of three doors is a fabulous prize. After you choose door #1, the host reveals door #2 has nothing behind it. She then offers you the opportunity to change your selection. Should you switch to door #3? This classic example of conditional probability, in which you determine the chance of something happening given that something else already has, is not as simple as it seems.

This course develops greater understanding of data and chance, two areas of mathematics that easily transfer from the classroom to the real world. Students conduct experiments and generate data which they display in graphs, charts, and tables to compare the effects of particular variables. For example, students might analyze data to examine how various design characteristics of a paper airplane, such as weight or length, affect the distance it will travel. Students also consider other data sources, including newspapers and journals, and identify examples of incorrectly gathered or misrepresented data that have been used to mislead consumers or influence voters.

Students also explore probability, the study of chance, to learn how numerical data are used to predict future events. Students examine permutations and combinations; develop strategies for calculating the number of possible outcomes for various events; calculate probabilities of independent, dependent, and compound events; and learn to distinguish between theoretical and experimental probability.

By the way, the answer to the question is, you should switch.
Countries addressing a global challenge like climate change, weapons proliferation, or the coronavirus pandemic often present their concerns to the United Nations. The ways in which the U.N. tackles them is sometimes controversial. Nevertheless, understanding its mission and functions remains essential to international relations. In this course, you will study the structure and processes of this multilateral institution through readings, discussions, research, and short lectures. You’ll examine how physical, economic, cultural, and political geographies influence and inform policymaking, build your writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills, and practice them in model U.N. simulations. You and your classmates will assume the role of ambassador to a particular country and research where you would stand on issues before the U.N.; draft position papers, and refine resolutions to present them to a mock meeting of the General Assembly, Security Council, or other U.N. entity. As novice diplomats learning the art of compromise, you’ll negotiate resolutions, practice parliamentary procedure, and build coalitions to represent your country’s best interests.

Past Classes
UNAG CHS 13.2 was instructed by Sierra and TA'd by Sarah. Halfway through the session, the UNAG class became engaged in prank wars with both Examining the Evidence B and Flight Science. A "UNAGicorn" was left in EXAM-B to be returned to the UNAG classroom as a EXAMicorn (with the addition of caution tape spread throughout the room). An attack on Flight Science had the consequence of numerous "airplanes" made of straws and clay stuck throughout the classroom, one of which was stuck in the forehead of the poster of the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, leaving TA Sarah very emotionally distraught. Nukes and North Korea were frequently discussed, despite not being part of the actual curriculum. They also got their own Nine-Square court, which generally hacked off the rest of the camp.

At CHS 14.2 (again instructed by Sierra and TA'd this time by Sam), the last debate turned into a World War III, after Rwanda launched an invasion of the UK, China sanctioned Russia for losing a nuke, and China sent 200,000 troops to invade Rwanda. This probably happened because of World in Conflict, an activity introduced by RA Gerard earlier in the session.

At CHS 15.2, UNAG started a feud with BACO-B, and there was much tension, targeting in foursquare, an ultimatum left on a bench on the quad, and a unicorn stuffed animal that UNAG threatened to kill if BACO did not accept their peace terms.

At BRI 15.2, the UNAG class members loved to play a variation of tag called 'Everybody's It' that was taught to them by their instructor. They loved it so much that they created standardized rules to the game, formed alliances, and even added commentators.
