The CTY Bethlehem site is hosted by Moravian College, the 6th oldest college in the nation, founded in 1742. It is curious in that includes both a CAA program for Older Students (OS), 7th-10th grade, and a CTY program for Young Students (YS), 5th and 6th grades. The OS and YS groups eat separately, though in the same dining hall, congregate in different areas, attend different dances, are housed in different dorms, and participate in different afternoon activities. However, for a few weekend activities, such as Color Wars and a few groups for Mystery Night, each YS group is placed with two OS groups (male and female). There are approximately 80 YS students and 160 OS students.

Buildings

  • The HUB (Haupert Union Building) is home to the site office, the forbidden carpet, cafeteria, auditorium, and the Pavilion, where OS dances, and weekend activities are held; off of the HUB is the Portico, where OS kids chill after meals, and the Patio, where YS kids chill after meals.
  • Bernhardt and Wilhelm Hall, nicknamed Bernie and Willie, are the names of the OS dorm buildings. The lounge in between the two buildings used to be open under RA supervision, but in 2008 was closed off for problems regarding money. The explained reason was the complaints of many students about loaning money to one another for sodas and candy and never receiving the money back . The OS males reside in Willie and the OS females reside in Bernie. It has said to be haunted. Many students hear creeking noises, mysterious knocking on doors, and sometimes a slow melody sang at night time. Students at Bethlehem 09.1 asked Moravian being haunted, and it is confirmed that the college has a lot of paranormal activty going on.

Edit: Due to construction on Bernie Willie during the summer of 2012, the OS will be located in Rau-Hassler and the YS in Jo Smith. Thus, for the first time in history the OS students at BTH will have air conditioning for the summer.

  • Rau and Hassler Hall are the names of the YS dorm buildings. There is also a lounge, called the Rau-Hassler or RH lounge, between the two halls, where the YS dances are located. The YS males reside in Rau and the YS females reside in Hassler.
  • Comenius Hall, a.k.a. the "Harry Potter Building", so dubbed for its Romanesque architecture, houses Psychology, Heroes & Villains, and Math Sequence, among other classes.
  • Zinzendorf houses the OS Writing the Expository Essay class
  • Reeves Library normally closed to student, but is used by some YS courses for class, and by both YS and OS for the use of computers for class activities.
  • PPHAC (Priscilla Payne Hurd Academic Complex) is a large, modern building housing one of the computer labs, as well as some of the science oriented courses.

Portico And Portico Wall

The Portico is the conjugating area of students after meals while waiting for class

  • Due to the unfortunate injuries Andrew, an RA, incured after attempting to jump over the Portico wall in 2004, a rule was put in place that no student may jump, wether clear over or onto the wall and then off of the wall, over the Portico Wall. This gave way to the phrase "Sit and Spin", which refers to the only rule-abiding way to get over the portico wall other than walking around it. During Session 2 2008, a group of students attempted to change the phrase to "Sit and Swivel", which was the phrase written on the Autograph book of Session 2, 2008. Returning students must wait until 2009 to see if their attempts to keep the phrase "Sit and Spin" will remain or if it will be replaced with the new phrase.

Edit: Didn't happen. 09.1, it was still known as the "Sit & Spin".

  • Another rule regarding the general area is the rule of no rolling down the hill. This rule was also made in 2004 after a group of students were injured while rolling down the hill. While there is no real punishment for this, repeat offenders might receive some sort of punishment such as having to sit with the RA's during Portico Time for an amount of time.
  • Many students, on the last day after being checked out by their parents, jump over the Portico wall and going directly into a roll down the hill, something that would never happen during the sessions both because of the rules as well as the groups of students that sit on the hill during camp that would probably get in the way of this.

Quad

  • The Quad is pretty much Moravian's baby. In 2004, the field was redone with a new sprinkler and drainage system.
  • The Quad is used for many activities for both OS and YS, as well as for the weekend activities such as some events in Color Wars and Olympic events.
  • The Quad is the main home to the Icy Hot Massacre (explained up Tradition). The Icy Hot Massacre first occurred in the quad on the weekend in 2006 session 2, later being carried into the dorms because of the close eye the RAs kept on the quad activities after the discovery of what the boys were doing with Icy Hot.
  • It is important to mention that Tri-Force looks forward to running around in the rain during one of Bethlehem's famous storms and they end their escapade's with a relaxing nap in the center of the quad as they are soaked.

Lady Gaga

It was revealed that Lady Gaga went to CTY Bethlehem in 1999 for Writing the Expository Essay (WRTG). To celebrate their famous alumna, the 2010 SRAs Gabo & Brittany named the RA/TA Workroom the "RATA Gaga Room." Lady Gaga's signature would occasionally appear on Friendship/Marriage certificates at the CTY Casino Chapel of Love. Pictures of Lady Gaga could be found on flyers and RA handouts. Also, the playing of any Lady Gaga song at an OS or YS dance is now considered a Lower Canon.

Pole Vaulters

First occurring in Session 2, 2007, and again happening during Session 2, 2008, CTY students shared the campus with sports camps, most notbly, because of size, the pole vaulting camp. While the soccer and basketball camps generally eat after CTY students and not as a pack, the pole vaulters, like CTY students, all go to breakfast together. While they are no threat to the halls who go to breakfast earlier, those halls going to breakfast around 8:00 AM, the pole vaulters also go around this time. This leads to long lines as well as some of the good cereals being gone before the later halls can get there.

In the year 2010 during Session 1, a veteran Pole Vault Camp RA made his way to being a CTY RA and diligently attempted to bridge the once hostile gap between the two camps. As interim liaison, mysteries like the consumption of the good cereals, and the vanishing cups from in front of the HUB were finally put to rest. Not only were RAs from both camps seen eating lunch together and getting to know each other, campers from both organizations cordially interacted in competitive games of 4 - square after mealtimes. On the night of the annual Vertical Assault Resident Counselor Vault session, the CTY RAs came to observe, where some even participated. In addition, a hall meeting agenda was given the theme of "Hall Meeting Assault" and contained a blurb about the origins of the pole vault. Walking around campus it could be noted that a number of CTY RAs were even sporting apparel obtained from Vertical Assault's camp. However, while great strides were made in helping both camps become more aware of each other, the influx of upwards to 100 hungry pole vaulters to the cafeteria remains a time of high strain between these two great camps.

Four Square

Four Square is a staple activity at the Bethlehem site, most likely due to the copious presence of suitable quadrangled sidewalks. The activity is popular with OS and YS alike, though YS CTYers are particularly enthused by it. (Indeed, so enthused that the RA's told them they played too much foursquare one year, and refused to give them the ball once, leading to the creation of Nameless, a foursquare variation using names instead of a ball.) The highest player, be it King or Ace, determines the set of rules upon ascension, including double-taps, bus-stops, stories, illegal serves, slamming (cherry-bombs), zapping, chicken feet, faults, line rules, connections, truces, et cetera.

A grid of especially large squares in front of PPHAC has given birth to "Extreme Four Square", which can be played in multiple ways.First, it can be played with teams of 2 or 3 kids per square. It can also be played with one person per square, which is usually accompanied by a rule of double bounces and double touches. Rules are otherwise the same, determined by the ace. However, Extreme Four Square can be rather harmful to one's health; in 07.1 a YS CTYer playing Extreme Four Square ended up with a sprained wrist.

Weekend Activities

  • Color Wars
  • Olympics
  • Casino Night
  • Talent Show
  • Movie Night
  • Second Session 2008 and 2009 had Mystery Night rather than Movie Night
This was explained to be because Mystery Night is a major effort on the part of the staff and they are simply too
overwhelmed to plan this for First Session
  • Amazing Race (10.1)
  • CTY Mission: Impossible (10.2)
  • To accommodate CTY Mission Impossible (10.2), Casino Night was changed to Casino Day/CTY Auction

Note: Due to Moravian College's policies, the Bethlehem site does not have a Water Carnival.

Tradition

Bethlehem suffers from a dearth of tradition. Recently, though, a few Forevermore RAs have made attempts to introduce some of the more general CTY traditions into the site community. Neither OS nor YS dances currently enjoy a canon beyond Smells Like Teen Spirit, Istanbul (Not Constantinople) and American Pie, but the circle-dance steps to American Pie have recently been introduced and maintained by Forevermores and returning students. Bethlehem does not have Passionfruit, but for 07.2 RAs held a Nevermore gathering after lights-out on the last Thursday. During both sessions 2009, a group of students requested a nevermore party of any sort with the help of RA Jonna. Their requests were not honored and no nevermore party was thrown. The hall which included the now nevermores, Tri-Force during 09.2 watched the sunrise on the morning of the last day.

The Moravian Cafeteria Staff has started a new tradition at CTY Bethlehem: Crazy Hat Day. This is during both first and second session and they give prizes to the Craziest Hats. This lead to a daily activity devoted to Crazy Hat Making the day before the contest. During '08, '09, and '10, the three years the staff hosted this contest, there has been a pretty good turn out.

BTH History

The site was known for its strong Ultimate program. The faculty team, starring the notorious Sean Patrick Kelly, suffered a 13-10 loss in 2007.

Sean Patrick Kelly, a forevermore, began another possible tradition in 2007 with the starting of the daily activity "Squirrel Safari" which, due to popularity, was offered again in 2008. Unfortunately, when he failed to return in 2009, so did Squirrel Safari. This activity is started with the education of the students on many squirrel facts, and is followed by walking around campus looking for squirrels.

Another less known tradition is the Icy Hot Massacre, in which many boys put Icy Hot on the backside of their package either in the dorm rooms or on the quad. This has lead the the guarding of the Icy Hot by RAs in the school store.

Tri-Force

Composed of Allegragrace, Parsley, and Olivia. They are pretty much synonymous with CTY Bethlehem (well, session 2 anyways). From the discovery of Sean Kelly's middle name (Patrick) to the conservation of traditions such as the dancing to American Pie and the infamous Sit and Spin V. Sit and Swivel debate, these girls have seen it all. Olivia even dated a member of the Icy Hot Massacre They have passed down the stories of CTY days long since passed to new generation CTYers They are famous for playing in the rain and getting in trouble for being soaked and hugging people. 09.2 Parsley and Olivia showered in the rain. Perhaps the greatest contribution was the performance of Moravian Pie at 09.2 talent show by Allegra and Parsley, a song which changed the words to American Pie and made it personal to CTY Bethlehem

Bananagrams

In 2010, the Bethlehem staff became obsessed with a game known simply as Bananagrams. The 2010 Site Director, Michael, brought his own personal game to the site and he (or the Academic Counselor, Matt) would start games in the office when it wasn't busy. The love of Bananagrams spread throughout all the branches of staff (Instructional, Residential, and Admin) to the point that there would be nightly matches in the main office. During 10.2, an epic Bananagrams battle ensued as 8 staff members played using two Bananagram bags worth of letters. This eventually led to a variation of Bananagrams in which teams were formed. Insults were hurled and words were debated, but the end result was a new tradition at CTY Bethlehem. Due to the constant use of Michael's Bananagrams game (and the mind-numbing number of potential germs), he donated his game to the CTY Bethlehem site for future use and bought a brand new game to take home.

Fire Alarm On the last night of 10.1, the fire alarms went off. To this day, no one knows exactly what happened, but the most popular version was that a boy had sprayed Axe over a smoke detector. Needless to say, there was a lot of confusion and grumbling; one boy had his face stepped on because he'd been sleeping on the floor (ISO.)

The Puerto Rican Era

During the '10 and '11 sessions, Spanish speaking students (predominantly from Puerto Rico) came to BTH to take courses. Some were in standard English courses, but many came for the Spanish speaking sections of BIOT and ANPY. There was an influx of Spanish speaking staff in order to accommodate the students. It was a wonderful experience for all, with only minor problems. The female students were particularly fond of the male RA and Jr. staff, particularly RA's Ruben and Borja, HA Tim, and TA Georgi. The residential staff also noticed an increase in dirty dancing incidents during the sessions these students attended. Some of the Spanish speaking students would also become upset if there wasn't enough Latino music played during the dances. RPA's Alicia (BTH '10 and '11), Sherri (BTH '11), and Rae (BTH '10) did not speak Spanish; this was a problem when Spanish speaking parents would call the office and the RPA's couldn't help. Thankfully Pau, Miguel, or Elvida were always in the office both years to help answer calls. The spanish courses were eliminated for 2012 and most of the students went to take standard english courses at the other sites.

Site Closure

At the end of '12 an email was sent to CTY staff informing of the site's closure. A new site will be opened at Haverford college, and the YS program will be moved to Lafayette College in Easton. The e-mail cites air conditioning, lab equipment and proximity to airports as reasons for the move. Employees will be given preference at either of the two sites and course selection will remain the same, so it appears likely that a good portion of the staff from BTH will end up moving to Haverford.

Here is a section of the email detailing the changes:

"I wanted to share the news that we will be moving the CTY Academic Explorations program for Grades 7 and from Moravian College to Haverford College in Haverford, PA. Our Younger Students program for rising 5th and 6th graders formerly at Moravian will move to Lafayette College. Moving locations enables us to have access to science labs, and it will enable us to house all students in air-conditioned facilities. The new location is also more convenient to students arriving by air. At the same time, we recognize and thank Moravian College for being a gracious host to CTY over the past 14 years. If you ever met Chris Hunt, Ann Claussen, and the Summer Conference team, you knew how caring and attentive they were to CTY’s needs. The majority of the positions at Moravian College will transition to either Lafayette College or Haverford College. Being able to offer essentially the same courses was one of the factors we considered in making our decision to move. As in every year, there may be a few changes to course offerings to meet shifts in student demands. Changes in the course offerings will be determined by the time we begin accepting employment applications for summer 2013."
