A duck's quack does not echo. Chuck Norris is solely responsible for this phenomenon. When asked why he will simply stare at you, grimly.

I'm flattered to be a sysop, but of course, I have to start school in the Fall too ;). I will try to log in from time to time though. --Sammka 17:43, 28 August 2006 (MST)

cool post on the main page, man, i just read all of it. Last year at JHU i had a wonderful conversation with my instructor, TA and 3 classmates on the walk back to the dorms from class. The topic of discussion morphed from matrix algebra to yoga and Jamaican spices, becoming one of the most interesting conversations I've ever had. Personally, I agree that the best things I've learned at CTY were not academic knowledge, but the ability to interact socially with others. After all, the phenomenon known as pCTYd is probably not (mostly) from missing 7-hour classes every weekday, but from the presence of a group of good people who really care about you. As to the administration, I think that perhaps they are just fearful of potential repercussions. As CTY is probably growing in enrollment (due to word of mouth or whatever) it is likely that more and more sensitive people would attend. Something that some people make fun of (religion) may be taken as highly offensive to others. I think that perhaps the administration is just trying to please everyone by piling on all these restrictions. As they cannot ban people who are overly religious or intolerant, they compensate by restricting some freedoms. But that's just my theory on it. And, after half an hour of searching, I finally found this, which is a letter written by a former CTY TA/RA about somewhat similar problems back in 1998. It's worth a read if you have some spare time, as it is quite lengthy. Also, as I have aged out, I will be attending a different program this summer run by the Rose-Hulman Institute of Tech in Indiana, and if you would like I'll tell you of my experiences there after I attend for future reference.
tl;dr: I agree that the social aspect of CTY is extremely important, but the program is following a trend of growth from as early as 1998 (see link) that it may be unavoidable. Find other places?
I apologize for the rambling, CTY just means a lot to me an a lot of your points hit home. --Chen

haha, righto then. --Sammka 18:31, 28 August 2006 (MST)

I just checked the holders of the duck for the years that I knew people (1997-2002) and they are all LLRT members, so yes, I suppose it did linger within LLRT. However, I don't think I knew the 1997-1998 holder of the Duck, even though I was a member of LLRT in 1998. So either LLRT was bigger than I remember, or there were exceptions.--Sammka 19:17, 28 August 2006 (MST)

oh, and a staff member who you certainly don't know and who definitely isn't on the CTY-Lancaster list would like to say as a random aside that the administration reportedly doesn't check your student disciplinary record when deciding whether to hire you as staff ;). In fact, such records are almost always archived and forgotten at the end of each year (or possibly at the end of one's time as a student).

Response to Alumni: I dunno what he means, but I want something a bit more organized. This is like a database of CTY, and the mailing list is CLEARLY missing some people. Plus for example when reunions come around, very little people know of the "Current Events" page and then we're scattered between Facebook and GoogleGroups and god knows what else! ~Yulia

I have to put up pictures from reunion, but this is STILL a database much more than an alumni sort of thing. Off to pictures! ~Yulia

Eh, just do what you want, if it pisses me off (personally) I'll let ya know, but it probably wont. (im incredibly tired and I just wanna put my pictures up)

Naah, fine with me :P ~Yulia

This may seem like an odd question, and if you have no idea what I'm talking about, please ignore this. But have you by chance played Mao on a trampoline at a Chinese Dinner Party before? -Wendeth

Why did you remove all reference to your last name from the site?--Jeff Sachs 08:14, 22 October 2006 (MST)

Given that this Kevin Lee has edited the Greek 1 page in highly offensive ways before(from IP 68.48.32.122, regarding being raped by a dean), why not just block him and his IP permanently? -Dutchman

Hey, I hear you have the Duck now. Right on. ----Andromeda 13:29, 2 August 2007 (PDT)

Wiki-Related Things

Okay, I have a few wiki-related things that I'm posting on your talk because you seem to be the most active sysop/crat:

  • There doesn't seem to be anything like Wikipedia's deletion policies, so I'll just say here that David and Staff:Sirinya Tritipeskul should be deleted. They have no content. (edit: They have been. -FJØRKËN)
  • Are there any policies on this site at all? Do we even have a policy/related things namespace?
  • What are the chances of templates being added to the wiki?

That's all I can think of at the moment. And we need a MOS/article criteria because most of the articles on this site are nowhere near encyclopedic. Of course, this being original research means that it's never going to be encyclopedic, but it can at least be written well. Ryan 16:05, 13 December 2007 (PST)

Another idea:

  • I think it might make things a little easier if we changed the site and course page titles to something like "LAN (Site)" instead of "Site:LAN", or "THEO (Course)" instead of "Course:THEO". It looks a little more like the Wikipedia format, and I personally find it less confusing.

FJØRKËN

  • Not to pile on a list of complaints here (as this wiki is an excellent way to share CTY culture), but what is wrong with wiki formatting (for example, '''? HTML is a bit unwieldy in a wiki article. Ryan 17:02, 19 December 2007 (PST)

From Luke Farrell:

Hello Memoriesonfilm. I was wondering that the templates for the main sites (Skidmore, Lancaster, Carlisle, Los Angeles,Baltimore) are restricted from editing, but some courses and other things on the templates are out of date and expired, so if you could let us edit the main sites to fit the 2016 Catalog for CTY, that we be great. If not, I understand. Sure when I have the time. And yes, it is Luke.

Thanks, Luke Farrell

Sorry about that...

Sorry about editing in ways that messed you up. I was just trying to save you some work - updating an entire wiki within the course of a few days can't be a very enjoyable task. Kakofonous 09:10, 24 December 2007 (PST)

Here are my responses to your questions (in order)
  • (a) I attended Siena this year...so you definitely wouldn't have seen me in real life. I don't really want to say my real name online (taking into account that, despite the small number of them, there have been spam users), so if that is preferred for a sysop, then I'm probably not your guy. I have a relatively large amount of experience with wikis, (with accounts on both Wikipedia and Uncyclopedia) and HTML and...that's probably about all that's relevant regarding me on RealCTY.
  • (b) Sure! Assisting with the site in a greater capacity would be something I'd love to do. Obviously some of the more sysop-y [sic] things like blocking bad accounts (seeing as there hasn't been a block in several months) don't need to be done as much here here than on larger sites, but if I can help with other stuff, I will.
Here are my contribs.
This is also on my talk page. I didn't really know which one to put it on. Kakofonous 19:51, 24 December 2007 (PST)

I saw your new message on the Main Page...what was the original overhaul supposed to have done? Kakofonous 12:47, 1 January 2008 (PST)

Any chance of an update? Don't mean to sound pushy or anything, but it's been a while… --Kakofonous 19:43, 29 February 2008 (PST)
I meant as to your decision of whether to sysop me or not...not a site update. My phrasing can be awkward at times... Oh, and there's something weird with the watchlist tool—it's displaying something that appears in the Wikipedia watchlist, but makes no sense here. --Kakofonous 17:54, 9 March 2008 (PDT)

Hi there-- This is Sirinya Tritipeskul writing here. I've tried to delete my page - a student magnanimously created it at Santa Cruz last summer - but I definitely would prefer NOT to see it online. Could you help me do that?

Couch/Grass orgies?

Why have the couch/grass orgy pages been removed, and why is there a message on the home page about them? Is this due to some pressure from JHU, or what? - Ryan 21:24, 28 June 2008 (PDT)

Grass orgies are now allowed :) I'm at first session at the moment. Head on stomach grass orgies are acceptable. Also I have a picture of frank totally leading you away into the distance. The alcove was looking foreard to meeting you.

Should I add a "sites offered" section to course pages? -FJØRKËN

Hiya there. Uh. Sorry for putting in "What the hell happened to this page." I just went to look at the glowstringing page and I felt like some sort of "WARNING this site got screwed up" sign or something. And sorry about the brackets, too, I just don't know where to put the information, since the LOS canon page is hella messy.

How open is the FNORD page to edits? (Such as the one someone tried to make a couple days ago.)-Horklinator

First off, none of the glowsticking records were "false." Also, considering you are changing your words now, maybe, just maybe, you should think about what you say before you say it. Once again, I must say, you don't know how things are at SAR, and once again you just use LAN as an example. And, by the way, they are very different. Yelling doesn't exist on the internet, and considering I have no power, how am I power tripping? You people simply administer a site badly, that's basically it. You're tone in writing just further shows that you're really just power tripping. And, just so you know, none of the removed items had "False information." What is there to restore? It's you people moving things left and right and deleting everything, not me. I, personally, find that you people are stupid for making a site that you run so badly. But, considering it is your site, I won't argue it further after this.

I just have one question to ask, considering that so many "positions" at LAN make it confusing as to how any of them have "legendary" importance... Why is "The Passing of the Duck" in the LAN HoF? I mean, it seems like you have millions of positions, so I don't see why having 5 people with an obscure position in the same room is anything "HoF-worthy." --- Of course, pointing this out will probably just annoy you, but, c'mon- To me, it doesn't really seem like anything that could ever be considered special. It's really just a memory. Now, maybe if you had 5 emperors from each site or something...

I would just like to remind you that if all you ever want to do is get rid of everything meaningful in SAR history from the only record-book around, then quite simply, this site has no purpose.

P.S. Try not to get so easily offended, you ARE power-tripping, grow up. Frankly, I don't care if you think that just because LAN is further-reaching than SAR that things in SAR mean less, but the fact that you won't even allow for a record of the biggest things from a site... That's just plain stupid-considering the whole reason of this site's existence.- --Pants 03:15, 20 August 2010 (PDT)

I didn't read what you said after the first paragraph, because as I said, I really don't care. You're being illogical and rather hypocritical. That isn't something I would except of a CTY-er, so simply I'm not going to waste my time. Feel free to control your site however you want, I already made my recommendations as to what should have been up there, I edited it accordingly, then it just got reverted. Frankly, you run the site in a certain way just because you went to LAN. You allow so much LAN junk that you find important, while ignoring what's that important to SAR students. But I must repeat, it's your site, have fun running it.

P.S. Maybe you should re-write things yourself, for instance the glowsticking records. Instead of merely removing them because of bad wording. Don't just yell at someone to fix it then delete it if they don't. Or rather, delete it and then yell at someone to fix it.--Pants

Get over yourself, I'm not going to argue this further. Considering you don't seem to care about it, I'm not going to try and improve it anymore. I already tried arguing for what I, and other SAR students I know think should be in there. I won't do your administrative work for you. You didn't accept help, so I'll assume you don't want it. Furthermore, all of that just leads me to believe this site really doesn't care about anything other than LAN. And by the way, I'm deleting it because banter is rather unnecessary, and the only reason you would want it to stay would be if you're being immature in being caught up in a stupid argument. Bottom line is, you win, it's your site- feel free to run it the way you want to. But, as I said, if you want students who actually went to SAR to help, "Don't just yell at someone to fix it then delete it if they don't. Or rather, delete it and then yell at someone to fix it." --Pants 02:48, 21 August 2010 (PDT)

porn/spam pages

I've noticed, after clicking the "Random Page" button a few times, that a large number of articles on the site are spam of some sort, and in a few cases are also porn/links to porn. I wouldn't want to bother you to look through all the articles for those that are "misbehaving", so if you let me, I'll edit the offending articles to have the title "Spam" or "Trash" or "Delete Me"... something like that so you or other sysops can easily identify them as to be deleted. pl0x get back to me, so I know if I should start my purge or not.--Jordar 16:05, 24 May 2011 (PDT) Oh and also, :D

yeah, I noticed this too and came here to let you know. If you look at the recent changes, the vast majority of them are new spammy pages. I'd be willing to help purge too if needed. --Maggie May 25, 2011

Here's an example of one of the spam pages I'd found today Stafford Subsidized Loans There are many more articles just like this one by various users... Jordar June 10, 2011

Nice job clearing out the spam! Here's some more pages (and their "authors") I found while browsing: Sankim - Esthetic Jobs For Cruise Ships Rawleac - Free Online Non Dating Chat Dynday - Crash Twinsanity Sountrack Download Free Ergenav - Online Dating Scam Ghana

regarding the all site consent form

I understand that you sent out an all-site consent form back in 2007. A bunch of us are working on a CTY documentary (which we are trying to get the approval for). We were wondering if you could show us the contents of the consent form-you sent out so we can get an idea of what to include in a possible form that we will send out.
