The CTY Bethlehem site is hosted by Moravian College, the 6th oldest college in the nation, founded in 1742. It is curious in that includes both a CAA program for Older Students (OS), 7th-10th grade, and a CTY program for Young Students (YS), 5th and 6th grades. The OS and YS groups eat separately, though in the same dining hall, congregate in different areas, attend different dances, are housed in different dorms, and participate in different afternoon activities. However, for a few weekend activities, such as Color Wars and a few groups for Mystery Night, each YS group is placed with two OS groups (male and female). There are approximately 80 YS students and 160 OS students.

Buildings

  • The HUB (Haupert Union Building) is home to the site office, the forbidden carpet, cafeteria, auditorium, and the Pavilion, where OS dances, and weekend activities are held; off of the HUB is the Portico, where OS kids chill after meals, and the Patio, where YS kids chill after meals.
  • Bernhardt and Wilhelm Hall, nicknamed Bernie and Willie, are the names of the OS dorm buildings. The lounge in between the two buildings used to be open under RA supervision, but in 2008 was closed off for problems regarding money. The explained reason was the complaints of many students about loaning money to one another for sodas and candy and never receiving the money back . The OS males reside in Willie and the OS females reside in Bernie.
  • Rau and Hassler Hall are the names of the YS dorm buildings. There is also a lounge, called the Rau-Hassler or RH lounge, between the two halls, where the YS dances are located. The YS males reside in Rau and the YS females reside in Hassler.
  • Comenius Hall, a.k.a. the "Harry Potter Building", so dubbed for its Romanesque architecture, houses Psychology, Heroes & Villains, and Math Sequence, among other classes.
  • Zinzendorf houses the OS Writing the Expository Essay class
  • Reeves Library normally closed to student, but is used by some YS courses for class, and by both YS and OS for the use of computers for class activities.
  • PPHAC (Priscilla Payne Hurd Academic Complex) is a large, modern building housing one of the computer labs, as well as some of the science oriented courses.

Portico And Portico Wall

The Portico is the conjugating area of students after meals while waiting for class

  • Due to the unfortunate injuries Andrew, and RA, incured after attempting to jump over the Portico wall in 2004, a rule was put in place that no student may jump, weather clear over or onto the wall and then off of the wall, over the Portico Wall. This gave way to the phrase "Sit and Spin", which refers to the only rule abiding way to get over the portico wall other than walking around it. During Session 2 2008, a group of students attempted to change the phrase to "Sit and Swivle", which was the phrase written on the Autograph book of Session 2, 2008. Returning students must wait until 2009 to see if their attempts to keep the phrase "Sit and Spin" will remain or if it will be replaced with the new phrase.
  • Another rule regard the general area is the rule of no rolling down the hill. This rule was also made in 2004 after a group of students were injured while rolling down the hill. While there is no real punishment for this, repeat offenders might receive some sort of punishment such as having to sit with the RA's during Portico Time for an amount of time.
  • Many students, on the last day after being checked out by their parents, jump over the Portico wall and going directly into a roll down the hill, something that would never happen during the sessions both because of the rules as well as the groups of students that sit on the hill during camp that would probably get in the way of this.

Quad

  • The Quad is pretty much Moravian's baby. In 2004, the field was redone with a new sprinkler and drainage system.
  • The Quad is used for many activities for both OS and YS, as well as for the weekend activities such as some events in Color Wars and Olympic events.
  • The Quad is the main home to the Icy Hot Massacre (explained up Tradition). The Icy Hot Massacre first occurred in the quad on the weekend, later being carried into the dorms because of the close eye the RAs kept on the quad activities after the discovery of what the boys were doing with Icy Hot.

Pole Vaulters

First occurring in Session 2, 2007, and again happening during Session 2, 2008, CTY students shared the campus with sports camps, most notbly, because of size, the pole vaulting camp. While the soccer and basketball camps generally eat after CTY students and not as a pack, the pole vaulters, like CTY students, all go to breakfast together. While they are no threat to the halls who go to breakfast earlier, those halls going to breakfast around 8:00 AM, the pole vaulters also go around this time. This leads to long lines as well as some of the good cereals being gone before the later halls can get there.

Four Square

Four Square is a staple activity at the Bethlehem site, most likely due to the copious presence of suitable quadrangled sidewalks. The activity is popular with OS and YS alike, though YS CTYers are particularly enthused by it. (Indeed, so enthused that the RA's told them they played too much foursquare one year, and refused to give them the ball once, leading to the creation of Nameless, a foursquare variation using names instead of a ball.) The highest player, be it King or Ace, determines the set of rules upon ascension, including double-taps, bus-stops, stories, illegal serves, slamming (cherry-bombs), zapping, chicken feet, faults, line rules, connections, truces, et cetera.

A grid of especially large squares in front of PPHAC has given birth to "Extreme Four Square", which can be played in multiple ways.First, it can be played with teams of 2 or 3 kids per square. It can also be played with one person per square, which is usually accompanied by a rule of double bounces and double touches. Rules are otherwise the same, determined by the ace. However, Extreme Four Square can be rather harmful to one's health; in 07.1 a YS CTYer playing Extreme Four Square ended up with a sprained wrist.

Weekend Activities

  • Color Wars
  • Olympics
  • Casino Night
  • Talent Show
  • Movie Night
  • Second Session 2008 had Mystery Night rater than Movie Night

Note: Due to Moravian College's policies, the Bethlehem site does not have a Water Carnival.

Tradition

Bethlehem suffers from a dearth of tradition. Recently, though, a few Forevermore RAs have begun attempts to introduce some of the more general CTY traditions into the site community. Neither OS nor YS dances currently enjoy a canon beyond Istanbul (Not Constantinople) and American Pie, but the circle-dance steps to American Pie have recently been introduced. Bethlehem does not have Passionfruit, but for 07.2 RAs held a Nevermore gathering after lights-out on the last Thursday.

The site is also known for its strong Ultimate program. The faculty team, starring the notorious Sean Kelly, suffered a 13-10 loss in 2007.

Sean Kelly, a forevermore, began another possible tradition in 2007 with the starting of the daily activity "Squirrel Safari" which, due to popularity, was offered again in 2008 and may become a returning activity in years to come. This activity is started with the education of the students on many squirrel facts, and is followed by walking around campus looking for squirrels.

Another less known tradition is the Icy Hot Massacre, in which many boys put Icy Hot on the backside of their package either in the door rooms or on the quad. This has lead the the guarding of the Icy Hot by RAs in the school store.
