Course Description
From the CTY Course Catalog (1996):
In this course, students explore the basic techniques of rock, mineral, and fossil identification. They learn to identify samples by observing and testing their physical properties. Students explore how geologists and paleontologists collect and identify specimens from the earth's crust and what causes the unique properties of these samples. Through class discussions and field work, the students explore the complex processes that create, change, and break down major rock types. With the use of the Audubon Society's Pocket Guides, such as The Familiar Fossils of North America and The Familiar Rocks and Minerals of North America, students learn techniques to begin their own scientific rock and mineral collections.
