* In 1995, I asked a teacher for a letter of recommendation. He asked what CTY was, and I responded with the correct answer and then some of the wittier alternatives to show how smart everything there must be to think of things like "Center for Troubled Youth." I gave him the course book, so he could get a better idea of just what goes on. Apparently he didn't look at it when he wrote the letter, because when I got it it was, in fact, addressed to the "Center for Troubled Youth." I was mortified and retyped it and corrected it and used a photocopier to get his signature from the first letter. I never told him, thinking that it was more fun to be thought of as troubled by him than talented.
