Competitive Mathematics Prep is a CTY Online course for students in grades 8-10 with qualifying math scores on the SAT or SCAT and have completed either Algebra I or Geometry and prior experience in the AMC 8 or AMC 10 is recommended, but not required. The course usually lasts for 3 months and its class code is CPM. Its class times are as follows:

  • Monday, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM
  • Tuesday, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
  • Tuesday, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Course Description

From the CTY Online catalog:

This course is designed to extend skills in problem solving, to foster mathematical creativity, and to prepare students for the American Mathematics Competition (AMC). Students learn to think at an advanced level as they tackle challenging problems and proofs.

Each week, students explore a different math topic or problem-solving strategy in depth, and practice solving contest-style problems. The weekly virtual classroom sessions, led by the CTY instructor, provide interactive and team-building experiences for students. In addition, the instructor provides individualized feedback and grades on weekly assessments.

Topics addressed in this 12-week course will include advanced concepts from number theory, algebra, and geometry. Each topic covered in the course is independent of the other topics. Students will not necessarily start with "Topic 1" in their first week of enrollment, but all topics will be covered in a 3-month enrollment. When all topics are covered, a student then takes the final exam.

  • Patterns, Sequences and Series
  • Sets and Venn Diagrams
  • Numbers and Counting
