Geometry and Spatial Sense (GEOM) is a Baby CTY course that students learn things such as congruence, symmetry and reflection. It is an introduction to Geometry. This course is offered at Alexandria, New York, Sandy Spring and the new Los Angeles site. It was previously offered at La Jolla Los Angeles (Windward), Owings Mills, San Mateo and Santa Monica.

Course Description

From the CTY Course Catalog (1999):

Spatial understanding is necessary for interpreting, understanding, and appreciating our inherently geometric world. Virtually every task a person performs--whether creating a Lego® kingdom, painting a portrait, or rearranging furniture in a room--req uires good spatial sense and knowledge of how different shapes fit together.

This course offers active experiences in discovering and demonstrating mathematical relationships such as reflections, transformations, and symmetry through exploration and investigation. Tessellations, congruence, similarity, measurement, polygons, poly hedra, and curved shapes are investigated through two- and three-dimensional physical models and drawings. Students create their own regular polygons using paper-folding techniques and learn the geometrical properties of various n-gons. They construct ge ometric figures using a straight edge and a compass and are exposed to the basic elements of geometry.
