Where I Live

I live in a really rural area of California - the most exciting thing currently happening is the locals sticking signs in the ground that read, "Keep It Rural, Don't Let Dollar General Come In". We have one grocery store/deli, one restaurant, and one thrift shop. The video store went out of business a few years ago, and there used to be a book mobile that drove in every Tuesday from the library in town, but the library lost funding and the book buggy doesn't come any more (that was sad, because when I was four it was pretty cool to wander around the trailer with all its bookshelves and browse). So yep, we all pretty much rely on Amazon Prime and occasional town expeditions. Except for my family. No, my mom is still draining all the Amazon warehouses in a 200 mile radius, but unlike the adults around that have been raised in the country their entire life and seem to have a phobia of technology, we are fine with the occasional automobile sighting. There is very little choice as far as extracurricular activities go, and those that exist never advertise - you just kinda stumble on some young teens reciting Shakespeare one morning and discover that there's an acting company in town. So because of this I am in either Xville* or the inaptly named Ycity* (inaptly named because the population is about 1000; it's fitting, really, that the only proper metropolis is a 2 1/2 hour drive away) four nights a week. So the town expeditions aren't really occasional, per se.

Proud Heritage

My dad was born in East Kilbride** (Scotland), then moved to Aberfelde (Scotland), and then to Glasgow (Scotland), and then to London (England) before meeting my Pennsylvanian/ Californian-after-six-years-of-age mom. They both got to travel a lot - my dad to Moscow, India, and almost all of Europe, my mom backpacking through Europe and Turkey after college, and their honeymoon in Italy. I am extremely jealous for two reasons: one, I have never left the U.S. since I was 8 months old, and two, they both got prime reading opportunities: My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell on the island of Corfu and the Illiad while sitting on the wall of Troy. I don't count myself very lucky to have read Mark Twain while in America. I wasn't even in Mississippi.

Favorites and Least Favorites

Favorite/least favorite color: I love all shades of blue and most shades of purple, as well as dark greens. I don't like really bright, electric, or unnatural shades of colors, and I usually don't fancy orange.

Favorite/least favorite food: Wow, I thought this would be fairly simple, but I like food. My least favorite is probably pear (sorry, pear lovers -my taste buds are weird).

Favorite/least favorite book: The mere thought of choosing a favorite or a least favorite is both horrifying and torturous.

Favorite/least favorite movie: Call me a nerd (or a CTYer, as those terms are used interchangeably most of the time), but I really enjoy documentaries such as Planet Earth, Human Planet, Yellowstone, India, Cosmos, How Art Made The World, etc.

Favorite/least favorite sport: I enjoy soccer and fencing, but have secretly always wanted to be like Katniss from The Hunger Games or Merida from Brave. My least favorite sport is tennis, because I'm really bad at it.

Favorite/least favorite pastime: I like writing, reading, drawing, reading, planning, reading, writing, reading, sketching, reading, writing, reading, planning, reading, painting, reading, writing, reading, studying, reading, planning, reading, writing, reading, reading, reading, and reading. And reading. I usually don't like jumping (I know that's random, but it's true!)

My mother won't actually let me post my real location on the internet, but those of you going to 16.2 San Rafael Chemistry will know me soon enough. She also won't let me hint at my name - unfortunately, it's not Tricia McMillian.*

When my dad told his soon-to-be wife (my mom) that he was born in East Kilbride, you can imagine her reaction.**

Nerd Heaven

This is a list of the things that make me me: my favorite nerd things. Be prepared for randomness and hopefully a feeling of, "Oh, I like that too!"

  • The song from The Sound of Music: My Favorite Things.
  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show
  • Clue (the movie)
  • I Love Lucy

(I will continue adding more in this category in my free time)
