2006.01-Pirate Day

During JHU-1-06 the Genomics class dressed up for the first ever Pirate Day. Attire consisted of eyeliner beards and mustaches (or just eye liner for a more rugged look), eye patches, cardboard and duct taped swords, head bands, and striped, red, black, white, and/or torn clothing. Members consisted of full fledged pirates, firates (female pirates), wenches, and ienches (it wenches - no gender). Honorary titles consisted of Ienchmaster, captain, Dread Pirate Amandark and murse. The genomics class pirated Tracey's hall, parts of the biology class, a TA (Nick) and an instructor (Tom). Sword fights were common during pirate day and usually resulted in missing arms, legs, and fingers. Such duels often resembled parts of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. During the meet and greet the pirates gave "pillage grams" which consisted of whacking CTYers with cardboard swords, declaring that their village had been pillaged, and giving them the opportuntity to direct the pirates to their next victims. Such victems were bubblicious, and Andy the RA who was pillaged by an umbrella-turned-sword. After receiving his pillagegram, Andy threated bodily harm on whoever was the leader of said pirate ship (known as the S.S. Eternally Damned). Said leader (Aman Daray) hid from Andy for the rest of the evening.

-Edit: There was also a more toned down version of a Pirate Day in Skidmore Session 1 2006. This was started by a nevermore named Edwin Ma who wished to honor a close friend of his named Andrew Yu who was unable to return in 2006. This was created due to the fact that Ninja Day (Sucessfully done in 2005 started by Andrew and Edwin) was cancelled because SRA Felicia said that students were not allowed to cover their faces. Andrew Yu was recognizable in 2005 Session 1 due to the fact that he wore a bandanna on his head like a Pirate everyday, so in Skidmore alongside End of the World Day a large group of people wore either bandannas or a t-shirt around their heads pirate style for what Edwin called "Pirate/Andrew Yu Day". Coincidently due to the fact that so few people had bandannas,(around 6-7 people) many people had to use t-shirts which resulted in looking like people were wearing doo-rags. This caused many people to instead call this "Gangster Day" which oddly enough "gangster" was a very oftenly used term by Edwin and Andrew and that Edwin was called by people who didn't know him "That gangster Asian" although Edwin repeatedly said he'd rather not be called that.

Siena Session 1 2006 also featured a pirate day, in the form of pirate versus ninja day, on the first friday of the session. This day featured many people dressed up in the all important character attire but not much actually competition between the two groups as the "vs" suggests.

we should so make that happen for next year Skidmore Sesh. 1 -Edit: At Saratoga, 2006 S.2, Pirates vs. Ninja vs. Cavemen was a daily during the second week where everyone beat each other with paper swords and clubs on South Park Lawn. Then we attacked the Chillaxin' daily.

-Edit: Carlisle Session 2 had both Pirate and Ninja activities one day, at the end of which they fought each other

2006.01-The Treehuggers

At JHU, a group of 12 students from the Crafting the Essay Class turned into the Treehuggers- A "club" that hugged trees in fierce protection and proudly held themselves as distinct people.

It was originally started when someone jokingly suggested that since "some of us liked to hug trees, we should be called the Treehuggers." A vote was held, and the title for "Treehugger" won unanimously. The Treehuggers were orginally known as the "Cerds" (pronounced kurds), a name suggested by Christine, which stood for Cool Nerds. However, after an RA pointing out that the kurds were actually a religious group, they changed the name, not wanting to offend anyone. The Treehuggers had some memorable days, especially when they sang their theme song during a fire drill:

Whoooooooo.... lives in a dorm room in AMR1? The Tree Hu-ggers! Who likes 2 dress crazy and have lots of fun? The Tree Hu-ggers! If hugging big trees be something you wish! The Tree Hu-ggers! Then come walk with Willie 'cause we dress so hip! The tree huggers, the tree huggers, the treee...huggerrrsss! Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo doo doo doo-Wail!

The wail ending the song was started by Wendy during the hall icebreaker on the first day when she introduced herself as "Wailing Wendy"

The Treehuggers also had one day dressed as "superheroes", dressing in peculiar clothes and marching while singing the theme song. They also were quite fond of Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of The Carribean, saying "Where's the rum?" and "And really good rum!" occasionally.

In fact, the Treehuggers became so notable that other students began to join the "club", although the original teenagers were the only active members. This group even hugged trees in the pouring rain, showing their dedication and love to the trees that gave us the air to breathe.

(The Treehuggers included Connie, Christine, Daphne, Grace, Gabby, Lena, Rachel, Sandy, Sarah, Paula, Wendy, and Whitney.)

Connie- Connie was not the most popular of the treehuggers. She was roommates with Paula and once held up her Crafting the Essay class because she did not want to read her writing piece.

Christine- Christine was the type of short asian girl who would randomly burst into song, particularly some rap of Eminem's, whom she was obsessed with at the time. She was best friends with Daphne, and they could often be seen walking with their other good friend, Wendy.

Daphne- Christine's "sbffaeaeaeaeaey." They went to the same middle school and by extreme luck or coincidence, they ended up in the same hall. Christine and Daphne were often seen with Wendy eating ramen with their hands, since they could not find utensils.

Grace- Grace, a half-korean, half-caucasian girl, became good friends with Paula. Thought some guy in her class was cute.

Gabby- Gabby was probably the only treehugger who was genuinely disliked. She hung onto Paula and made up a fake boyfriend. She also was obsessed with High School Musical.

Lena- Lena was extremely nice and outgoing. She had a love for musicals and plays, especially one about a crazy barber. She had some moments where she felt homesick and all of the treehuggers comforted her. All in all, Lena never really hated anyone. She was one of the coolest Treehuggers.

Rachel- One word. Antisocial. Didn't participate in any of the Treehugger's activities, and she preferred to stay locked up in her room writing in her journal. Rarely talked. Her roommate was Christine. Rachel really liked her privacy.

Sandy- Sandy was a very nice girl. She had small feet, and she was the only commuter in the group. She let Christine borrow her mp3 player on numerous occasions, as they both liked Yellowcard.

Sarah- So. Annoying. Followed Christine and Daphne everywhere, and even when they started talking in chinese about her, she wouldn't get the hint. They even gave her a nickname, "zhu," which means Pig in chinese, since she was fat. Also, she never shut up about history, and she was always complaining about how she had no friends.

Paula- Paula was amazing. She lived in Brazil and had curly hair, and everyone loved her. She was one of the coolest people ever! She also had an unhealthy obsession with Johnny Depp.

Wendy- Wendy, another amazing girl. She shared Christine's love of Yellowcard and violin.

Whitney- Whitney was very cool. She, Christine, and Wendy often had illegal sleepovers and midnight trips to the bathroom to eat snacks and hang out. Once Christine got caught sneaking into Whitney's room by the neighboring RA.
