Course Description

From the CTY Course Catalog (1996):

Professors in Cal State Fresno's School of Engineering have developed this course to acquaint participants with fundamental principles of engineering as illustrated in the construction of a conventional family home. Features of the home often taken for granted, such as electric lights, gas appliances, indoor plumbing, and load-bearing walls, will be examined. The fields of civil, mechanical, industrial, and electrical engineering will be reflected.

Participants will increase their awareness of the interrelatedness of workers, materials, equipment, and energy. There will be an emphasis on solving problems, such as how to build on a slope, and on presenting solutions in a clear and logical format, utilizing, for example, working drawings. Practical as well as theoretical skills will be developed. Observations at home construction sites and visits by engineers and craftspersons from various fields will supplement classroom and laboratory work. Under close supervision, students will participate in the design and construction and/or renovation of an actual house.
